GAME LEGISLATIONS PROGRESS Hunting License Scope Expanded New Officials and Preserves WASHINGTON D C December 18 Progress was made during 1918 in the administration of game laws increasing the number of refuges and preserves and in miscellaneous legislation according to a summary of game laws for this year made by George A Lawyer and Frank L Earnshaw of the Biological Survey Probably SurveyProbably the most important feature of the 1918 game legislation in their view was the enactment of a law in Maryland prescribing statewide hunting licenses and creating a game protection fund for the support DepartmentIn of the State Game Department In New York the payment of moneys to special protectors has been abolished and the salaries of protectors increased from 930 to 1000 with a maximum under the merit system of 1500 instead of 1300 for those in the first grade and establish ¬ ing a maximum of 1300 for those in the second grade the title of division chief game protector was changed to inspector and the salary in ¬ creased from 1000 to 1800 the game protectors have been furnished new uniforms and have been anned with 2520 Winchester rifles to be used in exterminating vermin and birds of prey Three preyThree men were added to the warden service in New Jersey and the salares of chief protctor assistant protectors and wardens are each increased 300 in the aggregate the increases beiuff iipjior tioned serviceIn over four years of service In British Columbia the work of game protection has been placed in the hands of a game conservation board boardGAME GAME HEFUGES AND PEESERVES PEESERVESContinued Continued interest is manifested in the estab ¬ lishment of game preserves and while the volume of legislation of this character is not large it is worthy of mention mentionThe The War Department lias created the Alxrtleon Proving Ground in Maryland consisting of nearly all the territory south of the Susquehaima and north of the Gunpowder River and between the Pennsylva ¬ nia Railroad and Chesapeake Bay including some of the finest waterfowl sections on the Atlantic coast and hereafter no hunting will be permitted thereon thereonIn In Rhode Island the Commissioners of Birds have been authorized to establish state game reservations on private lands by lease orwitli consent of owners ownersNew New Jersey appropriated 5000 with which to purchase additional land adjoining the state game farm RiverIn at Forked River In Canada Alberta has established two game pre ¬ serves the Cypress Hills and the Cooking Lake Forest reserves reservesA A campaign against cats found in pursuit of birds has been authorized by law in New York This act was the result of a compromise secured by those who desired a provision that cats should be licensed Efforts to secure cat legislation in Mary ¬ land Massachusetts and New Jersey were again unsuccessful unsuccessfulIn In New York waterfowl may not now be taken with a rifle in the forest preserve counties or on Long Island New Jersey has made it unlawful to hunt from an automobile or by the aid of lights carried thereon An act of the Virginia Legisla ¬ ture imposes on game wardens the duty of killing dogs found destroying sheep Rhode Island has made a distinct advance In game protection by prescrib ¬ ing for the first time a bag limit of not more than fifteen game birds in possession
