NEW YORK TRACK RECORDS CHANGED Performances of Roamer Sun Briar Polymelian and Cudgel tho Outstanding Features in This Line NEW YORK N Yf December 27 There were strange doings in the recordbreaking line on the eastern tracks last season Horses some of which are little better than selling platers hung up marks and so frequently were the records changed that at times it was mystifying The new track at Sara ¬ toga was so fast that no fewer than ten new track records were established one of which Sun Briars mile in the Delaiyare Handicap in 136 eclipsed the phenomenal mile of Amalfis made at Saratoga by a fraction of a second Sun Briars achieve ¬ ment is now recorded as an American record in a race Against time at Saratoga Roamer covered the mile course in 134 This was a race against the longestablished standing record of Salvator when he covered a mile over a straight course in 135 Both the records of Sun Briar and Roamer will be set down ia American turf history as great achievements Sim Briar subsequently ran a mile against time at Saratoga in a private trial in 134 but there being nothing official about the perform ¬ ance it is not recognized in racing annals Roamer also hung out another track record at Saratoga in the Saratoga Handicap at a mile and a quarter which hi covered in 202 V6 arid again he equaled the mile and an eighth record at Empire City cov ¬ ering the route in 151 time made by Dalmatian in 1910 The two latter performances of Roamers were made more meritorious by the fact that he carried 129 and 12S pounds respectively in these two races racesGeorge George Smith equaled Roamers Jamaica records of a mile and a sixteenth in I453i although he carried six pounds less weight than did Mr Andrew Millers gelding when he made the record the year prior A most creditable record is booked to Poly melian Mr W It Coes exceedingly fast sprinter With 140 pounds in the saddle he ran threequarters at Saratoga in lUOJS and while it does not con ¬ stitute an American figure Iron Mask holding the title with a mark of 109 made at Juarez it was almost as good as the latter had but 115 pounds up when he hung oat his figures five years igo CUDGELS GHZAT FZAT FZATThe The performances of Roamer Sun Briar and Poly ¬ melian stand out from the other record breakers of the year with the exception of Cudgels mile and threesixteenths at Saratoga which he covered in 151 with 131 pounds up This supplanted the per ¬ formance of Milton B at Latonia in 1913 by three fifths of a second secondAll All told there were something like twentysix track records equaled cr lowered during tho year m local tracks The tracks are just crazy was the general comment when some horse would slice the standing time of a race When such horses as Harwood II Conduit Toto Sea Pirate Pigeon Wing Tuscaloosa Jyntee Water War Little Nearer and others of that ilk hung out records lit ¬ tle wonder was it that men should say the tracks were crazy crazyThat That many of the records made last year were lne to the exceedingly fast tracks more than to the speed of the horsus that made them is gen ¬ erally accepted Atmospheric conditions also had t bearing it being an exceptional season for fine veather Too many cheap horses created track records for all achievements to be taken seriously That the figures in many cases recorded for the past racing season will be wiped out in the near future is anticipated many of them being made by inferior horses in their respective classes
