BELMONTS RETURN TO THE TURF NEW YORK N Y December 27 Now that Major Belmont has returned from France and that the war is practically over racing affairs in this state may take on a more lively attitude Major Belmont is practically the soul and body of the Jockey Club and notwithstanding reports to the contrary to him is due the restoration of racing to a great extent When things looked the blackest Major Belmont never gave up hope that the toppling industry would right itself with a little energy and perseverance He worked untiringly for two years and racing folk are today receiving the bene ¬ fits of his exertions and brains brainsMajcr Majcr Belmont has peculiar methods and ideas at times that do not always meet the approval of some racing folks but when a knotty question is to be solved Major Belmont is the first one to be appealed to During the war the chairman of the Jockey Club lias spent much of his time with government affairs and had little leisure for racing That is one raison why he permitted his stable of horses to drop into comparative seclusion after the falling lame of Hourless Lucullite and Stromboli last spring I have no time for racing these days was his remark Then why continue with a few horses that are of little or no value valueNow Now that peace is in sight there is every reason to believe Major Belmont will again be interested in turf affairs to a much greater extent than he has been for the past year At least that is the wLsh of those who know what he has done for the perpetuation of the American turf and what he is capable of doing with just a little assistance from hii associates
