KENTUCKY DERBY OPEN TO GELDINGS NEW YORK, N. Y., January 10. When asked whether geldings would be barred from this yenrs Kentucky Derby, manager Matt J. Winn; said it was still an open question. "Personally, I would be in favor of excluding geldings from the Kentucky Derby," said Colonel Winn. "This is my own personal feeling, but I am still open to conviction. I believe that Mr. Grainger, my associate at Churchill Downs, has been quoted as saying that geldings would not be barred. As a matter of fact, Mr. Grainger has given out no positive statement.in this regard. The way I feel about It is that there are just a few races in the country which should be for mares or fillies and entire horses. I am not in favor of the proposed rule now up to the Jockey Club which would exclude geldings more than two years old from all the big stakes. There are, however, a few stakes, such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Latonia Derby, Belmont. Withers, Realization and Saratoga Cup from which geldings might be excluded with all good reason. I do not think that many horsemen would be in favor of the rule to exclude geldtags from all stake races, such as has been proposed." -
