RACING WELL PATRONIZED New Orleans Racegoers Furnish a Big Crowd for Monday. Reveler Wins the Chief Race in a Close Finish Squeeler Wakes Up and Takes a Purse. XEW ORLEAXS, La., January 20. The return of good weather brought with it an increased patronage to the Fair Grounds, the attendance being particularly large for Monday, and included many first-timers for this season. A diversified program of seven races, with small fields in most of them, served to furnish interesting sport, featured by several close finishes. The mile dash, to which ,000 was added, was the main offering, and it resulted in a hard fought stretch duel between Reveler and Xepperhan, with Reveler winning in the last few strides. The winner, carrying the colors of John Lowe, was the extreme outsider of the five making the contest. Bribed Voter and Fern Hundley absorbing most of the speculators attention. Bribed Voters failure was due to his getting mired,-in the ,mud hole, on the backstreteh. Prior to this he had been a challenger and in close pursuit of Xepperhan, the pacemaker. B. J. Brannons Squeeler won the first purse for that owner during this meeting; and his victory was in hollow fashion, with the outsider. Topcoat, landing second place, and Bon Tromp leading Dragoon. The faulty riding that both Bon Tromp and Dragoon received caused adverse comment, and owners Schorr and Lowe were anything but pleased Willi jiic xitiXimjiKttT.izij ? i .., jyrrr"? Opportunity "again scored a winning performance when he led a fairly good field home that started in the fiftli race, in which he was the popular choice. Jiffy, which finished second, might have reversed the finish with him but for being in tight quarters during the stretch drive. Old Ben, a favorite of long ago in these parts, showed something of his old time form by winning the closing race in decisive style from Cracow and Honolulu. Don Dodge, which was recently acquired by May-field and Tevis, won for them at the first asking when he led home the fourteen that started in the sixth race. The two-year-old dash -went to Canvasback, carrying the colors of P. A. Clark. He showed a high turn of speed, but it is unlikely that he will develop into a Dunboyne. George Strate, manager of J. H. Rosseters Wiki-up Stock Farm in California, arrived today witli six: two-year-olds belonging to Mr. Rosseter. They are all sons and daughters of mares that Mr. Rosseter brought from abroad and which reached this country in foal. The youngsters are quartered at Jefferson Park, there being no room for them at the Fair Grounds. Mr. Strate reports that the first foal of the year at Wikiup ranch was dropped January 12 by Mauritania. It Is a brown filly and is the first of the progeny of Disguise since that stallion became the property of Mr. Rosseter. Eleven other mares are in foal to Disguise and twelve to Friar Rock. Mr. Strate was well pleased witli the condition of the Rosseter horses in training here under the care of C. J. Casey. JOCKEY CLARK 17 HOSPITAL. John Clark, a junior rider employed by the stable of Edward Cebrian, was removed to a local hospital late Sunday night suffering frorii pneumonia. W. F. Knebelkanip has acquired Sophia IC;, a four-year-old filly by King Olympian Maydine. J. H. Loueheim. who has an interest in the horses running in the colors of J. S. Ownbey, arrived today from Xew York. Joseph Stern is in receipt of a letter from Henry McDaniel in which that trainer stages that he will ship Exterminator and five other horses belonging to Willis Sharpe Kilmer to Hot Springs at the .end of the present month. II. S. Koppin has sold to his former trainer. T. F. . Bornman. Philistine, Swift Comet, Kerrigan and the two-year-olds I Am First, Lucky Seven and Wish I Could. The military race, which was originally scheduled for last Saturday and deferred till next Saturday, may again be postponed., Captain Allen, in charge of the amp Beauregard team, has requested Judge Murphy to further postpone the race until February 1. Andrew Millers Ticket struck himself in his race Saturday, and pulled up lame. In consequence he had to be excused from starting in the fourth race today. Tom Murphy, the well-known trotting horse driver of Poughkeevsie. X. Y., was among todays visitors. Msyfield and Tevis lost Don Dodge, winner of the sixth r.ice. when William Walker claimed the gelding for iftlOO. Walker was represented in the race by Inquietn. Jcckey CruniM. who had his license revoked last Saturday for his faulty ride on Pickwick, will be given a hearins again when Judges Smith and Campbell resume their duties, both leing absent from the stand at. present on account of illness. The Fair Grounds board of stewards will perfect their organization next Wednesday and elect a chairman and secretary. They will also hear reports from the fudges at the track. A.
