DEATH OF WEALTHY SCOTCH TURFMAN The death took place in December in a nursing home at Glasgow of Mr. James Baird Thorneyerof t. one of the principal directors of Messrs. AAilliam Baird and Co.. the Scottish iron and coal masters. Mr. Thorneyeroft. who was about seventy years of age, was one of the most prominent business men in Scotland. . His colors gray and crimson hoops, white cap were often carried on our courses, but never by any horse that distinguished itself to any extent, though he sometimes paid considerable sums for them. In recent years they were trained at Man-ton by Alec Taylor, and last season he had, among others, Damask and TJierinogene. Neither of them won, Imt Therinngcne, of Which something was x-jiected, ran xecond t. Beiievente for the Craveiri Stakes at Newmarket, but made no show in the Two Thousand Cuineas, thougli he afterward was runner-up to Homme Kiss f,n the Newmarket Stakes. In the New Derby 1"- was unplaced, and was also unsuccessful in some minor races for which he was saddled. Damask i" 1?17 accounted for three! stakes, the most valuable of which was the Clear-well, and another was at Ayr, a meeting which always received the patronage of the. decedent. About the best, from a monetary point of view, that fell to him was the Mersey Stakes at Liverpool, won by Grimmet. by Desmond Curlew, which alto took the Soltykoff Stakes at Newmarket in 1908. The following season the colt also won a couple of small events, but had descended to plating form, and he made no great return for the 1,000 guineas paid for him as a yearling. A more pronounced case of failure was that of Desmonds Hope, a colt by Desmond silver Pheasant, for which Mr. Thorneyeroft gave the substantial sum of 6,100 guineas as a yearling at the Doncaster sales In 1913. A large number or engagements were taken for him, not one of which was he able to fulfill. Horses that did some service for htm. at various times. In addition u, tijSe already referred to, may be mentioned in Dainage, Canilurg. Erriff, St. Oro-d.iur. Ornate, Countess of Desmond. ICilmein. line. The Marker. liarnhrad, Tnriibcrry, Rod Sate and Springside. Perhaps the best of this latter was Damage, which won several races, but none of much value or importance. Loudou Sportsman.
