United States Government Stallions Stars of the Turf, Now Doing Service for Uncle Sam Thirty of them Earned Over f 250,000 During Their Careers Everyone a Winner Their Racing Records Thirty thoroughbred stallions, now the property of the United States government, earned during their racing 011 the American turf a total of 25,918.40. Eight of these earned in stakes and purses more than 1,000, three of them topping 0,000. Three others won more than ,000, and there is not one of these in the service of the country that was not a winner while racing. This most interesting history of the stallions has been compiled, by Algernon Daingcrflcld, assistant secretary of the Jockey Club and secretary of the Breeding Bureau of the Jockey Club. Almost every imiortant stnKe in the country is represented by a winner that is now in his remarkable collection of thoroughbred sires, and, be-gining with Yankee, who tops the list with a total of 8,030. a Futurity Is in his list. Other stakes that were won by one .or other of these stallions are the Kentucky Derby, Latonia Derby, Hopeful, Saratoga Special, Saratoga Handicap, Commonwealth Handicap, Carter, Jerome, Huron, Long Beach, Hamilton Derby, Counaught Cup, Clark Handicap, Woodstock Plate, Queens City -.Handicap, Hurricana. Albany Handicap, Seagate, Flash, Crab Bag Handicap. Champlaln, King Edward Hotel Gold Cup, Ramapo Handicap, Tarrytown Stakes, Havre de Grace, Chesterbrook and Knickerbocker Handicaps, Anne Arundel Stakes and many other of the American fixtures. RACING NOT CONSIDERED. When it is remembered that in the selection of these stallions no, .attention.. was,, paid to their, per-"fonnancesorr -tiie.v,traclf vtheVTrecord .of, Jhelrwiri-nings is all the more remarkable, and It only serves to emphasize the truth that the race track, is the only testing ground for the thoroughbred horse. What was wanted and what was selected for the government service was a band of stallions of a suitable type,- and that was demonstrated In the report of F. Ambrose Clark, official inspector" on . the acceptance of stallions. Iu his report Mr. Clark says : "As a type I especially approve a stallion 15, 3 to 1C. 1, on good short legs, plenty of girth, with especial attention paid to strong loins, hocks and good bone. Of course good shoulders if possible, but less essential than the- other qualifications." From May 15 until December 15 Mr. Clark, associated with Captain Gaston A. Roy of the French High Commission, Colonel M. C. Bristol and Major Robert Strawbridge of the National Remount "Department, inspected 107 stallions, and the care with which they were chosen is reflected in the small percentage that stood up under the test. All of which means that if was type that was desired. ONLY A BEGINNING. Government breeding of horses is still in its infancy in America, but thanks principally to the intelligent work of Mr. Clark and his associates the country now has the nucleus for a breeding establishment that will work an incalculable, good for the betterment of the breed. In other countries the horse has enjoyed a government support for years, and vast sums have been expended in the purchase of suitable thoroughbred sires for breeding purposes. This support of the horse naturally meant the suppor.t of racing, and in consequence the sport has been placed on a firm footing and has endured. Here, without this most needed support, this wonderful showing has been made in the collection of stallions at little or no expense to the government, and it is a beginning that army men have heartily appreciated. Mr. Clark has expressed the hope that the government breeding will be placed in the hands of a suitable board and will continue and grow by the purchase of thoroughbred sires of importance. The story of what the government stallions accomplished on the turf is best told In the following table: Yankee, b. h. 1899, by Hanover Correction. Track. Year and Race. Dist. Wt. Value. 1501.
