MORE EXCESSIVELY FAST MILES RUN LAST YEAR THAN IN ANY PREVIOUS YEAR OF AMERICAN TURF HISTORY A fast-run mile always excites and pleases all beholders. The mile being the yardstick of measurement in racing, there is a measure of fascination attendant on seeing crack racers stretch themselves out in noble striving over that exact distance that does not appertain to contests over its fractional distances. The racing of last year was prolific of remarkable exploits over the mile route, and for the first time in the history of American racing 1:37 was excelled on eight different occasions. It was due to the genius of Hilly Myer as a track master that the Saratoga track was made so unprecedentedly fast that six of the eight extraordinary miles were made over it, the exceptions being Roamers 1:36 at Aqueduct and Eseobas 1:305 nt Douglas Park. The latter was the fastest mile ever recorded over a Kentucky track. This exceedingly fast young horse is reported to have recovered from the injury which led to his retirement from, racing last year, and if he remains sound may make a Saratoga record for himself next August. As evidence of the superlative speed of that track it may be further pointed out that of the twenty-nine miles run last year in 1:38 or faster fifteen were run at that place. As a matter of current interest and testimony in regard to the good class of the letter horses now racing at New Orleans it may be noted that the names of Franklin, Bradleys Choice, Buford and Slippery Elm are in the following list of the superior milers of 191S: Horse.
