DEATH OF A VETERAN TURFMAN At the advanced age of ninety-one the death has taken place at Lausanne of Baron A. de Schickler, who was for some sixty years a prominent figure on the French turf. During that long period he was a member of the racing committee of the Soeiete dKncouragement and a leading member of the French Jockey Club from 1857 to 1915. Though of Prussian origin, he was born in Paris, and for many years was a naturalized Frenchman, but was connected with the Berlin banking firm or Delbruck, Schickler and Co. In view of that fact, though no ill-feeling was shown against him, lie resigned his membership in the French Jockey, Club and took up his residence in Switzerland in 1915. Most of the great races in France fell to the deceased, and he won the Prix du Jockey Club ! French Derby on five occasions in 180S with Suzerain, in 1SSG his Sycomore dead-heated with Upas, in 1S92 with Chene-Koyal, in 1893 with Rugotsky and in 1897 with Palmiste. In the Grand Prize of Paris he was successful witli Fitz-Roya in 1890. with Ragotsky in 1893, in the following year with Dolmu-Baghtche and in 1900 with Semcndna, while the Prix de Diane French Oaks he also won with the latter filly, a well as the Poule dEssai des Pouliches French One Thousand Guineas. The baron also owned the famous gray horse Le Saucy, which left his mark in many events while racing, winning twenty-seven of the total value of ii 14,327, and became the sire of several thoroughbreds which distinguished themselves in important events. Semendria was one of his prog-env. and so was Palmiste, Ex Voto winner of the Prix du Jockey Club in 1903, and Le Justicier, which carried off the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park in 1895. The stallion Edouard III., whieli has just died at the Haras de Nonantcl after a long service at the stud, was also by Le Sancy, which was hv Atlantic the Two Thousand Guineas winner of 1874 Gem of Gems, by Thormanhy.
