SOME FACTS REGARDING STARTING GATE Since the starting gate has been regularly used In this country no really serious accident has hap ¬ pened at the post to any jockey although it is a wonder they have not frequently occurred I notice however that in South Africa recently a jockey named Ridlington met with his death at the gate on the Benoni race course It appears that the tapes caught the unfortunate jockey round his neck and pulled him violently out of the saddle as a result of which he fractured his skull The first roiiasiin on which the starting gate was publicly tried on a racurourse in England was on Monday October li1 1S7 at Newmarket It was not until 100 that the machine came into regular use when its operation was confined to twoyearold races the first youngster to score under the new method being W Elseys Seal which was ridden by Yar nell and was one of the outsiders of the party for th Tathwell Auction Stake run at Lincoln on Monday March 111 This was not an auspicious lart for backers In 101 the system was extended JO threeyearolds and a year later came into Vfiipral tise Aiidax in Horse and Hound
