STABLE OF W H KARRICK Horses of W R Coe and Quincy Stable Make Up His Charges Terentia and Elfin Queen Ex ¬ pected to Prove to Be His Star Racers NEW YOKK N Y March 21 William H Har ¬ riet lias thirtyfive horses in his care at Itelmnnt Park Of these twentyeight are the property of V It Coe six belong to the Oneck Stable and one Dciidern will race in lie colors of Charles P Hill who looks after the interest of the Clarence Mackay thoroughbreds in this country It is a promising stable one that will surely have to be reckoned with when the sport begins It is more convincing from the fact that of this number but one lias at ¬ tained the ago of four the remainder being two and throeyearolds the majority being twoyearolds Mr Karrick is what might be termed rich in tliree vcarold fillies having two Elfin Queen and Teren ¬ tia which barring Commander Ross Milkmaid will probably command the rest in the filly stakes and possibly give the colts an argument worthy of their cx in open races Last year Elfin Queen was a bright star in the early weeks winning everything before her until she had to be shelved when her chances of being the champion youngster were exceedingly brilliant brilliantHer Her last race was in the United States Hotel Stakes nt Saratoga For a half mile she raced with the speedy High Time and Dunboyne and then something happened causing her to fall back Mr Karrick had a second entry in the race in Terentia from Mr COPS string which finished third to Hilly Kelly and Dunboyne after coming from a long way in the rear Considering the fact thitt Elfin Queen had always shown to hejUuiuucliJintter filly than Uoreuiiu it can Iw safely predicted but for the failure of Elfin Queeii she would certainly have been a decided factor in the race as Terentia was ony beaten two lengths and a half by Hilly Kelly and one length by Dunboyne War Pennant was a contender and finished a length and a half behind Terentia Taking this race as a line it indicates that Elfin Queen was pretty near the Iiliial of if not better than either Hilly Kelly or Dnnlioyue especially as she had before proved in public to be almost ten pounds better than Te ¬ rentia in the Astoria Stakes at Aqueduct in which she finished second to Terentia conceding the latter twelve pounds in weight and being beaten in a driving finish by only a half length lengthPrior Prior to that Elfin Queen had a string of vic ¬ tories excepting in hcr maiden race in which she had an exceedingly rough experience being cut off several times which unquestionably prevented her from winning If this filly comes back to her best form of last year she seems decidedly the best of the weaker sex in her division divisionIn In Terentia Mr Karrick lias a mighty fine filly one that is entitled to all serious consideration She is a good weight packer in her last race taking up pounds and running Merry Princess to a length giving her eighteen pounds Her prior race was at Helmont Park in which she conceded about eighteen pounds to War Pennant and brought him to a drive to beat her by a length and a half Whether she is a good mud runner is a question She won a race in the slop at Helmout Park which is not a positive criterion Helmont Park always having n solid foundation and raced second to Han ¬ nibal over a heavy course in the Saratoga Special being beaten five lengths in a race that did not compare with other races run the same day from a time standpoint In other starts in heavy going she did not loom up prominently lieuce it is fair to presume that Terentia is not at home when the track is deep in mud Elfin Queen is likely to per ¬ form much better in the mud than Terentia as she beat Hannibal in the slop at Helmont Park and simply cantered home in the Fashion Stakes two days later over a slow track Through the Hannibal line Elfin Queen is a far better heavy track nicer than Terentia TerentiaDOMESTICBRED DOMESTICBRED TWOYEAROLDS TWOYEAROLDSOutside Outside of these two fillies there is a wide gap before reaching the next best in Karricks three yearold division Sweep On is a good colt and Over Then will win races but there is no com ¬ parison between these two and Elfin Queen and Tcrentia The only handicap horses Mr Karrick lias Avill have to come from the threeyearolds as Nutcracker has little to recommend him Thunder ¬ clap from the Oneck Stable may prove a useful horse having several victories to his credit though lie only Iwat rather common horses Should he im ¬ prove on his form fie might develop into a useful sort of horse though it is doubtful if he will race himself into high estimation Outside of Elfin Queen and Terentia Mr Karrick will have to de ¬ pend upon his twoyearolds to gather in any stakes There is no predicting what lie will do in this department at present and while lie may have preferences among his eighteen he can give no assurance of their promise until he has given them a fair trial both in private and publicly Nearly every twoyearold in the stable is domesticbred many of the Coe band being Star Shoots the re ¬ mainder being by a mixed lot of stallions includ ¬ ing Disguise Celt and the English horses Corcyra and Sir Archibald The Oneck Stable has a beauti ¬ fully bred filly by Sweep Kaskaskia and two by Celt dams Orowoe and Lady Godiva Should the Sweep Kaskaskia filly inherit the qualities of both her sire and dam bright tilings are in store for her Her mater was a fine nice mare and the progeny of Sweep have been wonderful wonderfulSo So far as jockeys are concerned trainer Karrick is well off having Fairbrotlier McAtee and Myers under contract While they may not be quite up to tho class of Loftus Robinson and one or two others they are much better than the majority Fair ¬ brotlier had an average almost as good as Robinson last year while MeAtee and Myers were well up in the middle division of riders They scale from 111 pounds down to 100 pounds Fairbrother being th heaviest and Myers the
