OAKLAWNS DERBY DIVISION Seventeen Kentucky Derby Can didates in Training There Eternal the Center of Critical CriticalConsideration Consideration but the Others OthersAre Are Not Overlooked HOT SPRINGS Ark March 22 Seventeen Ken tufky Derby eligible ire now quartered at Oaklawn Jark in this city Tills is a trifle less tlian one fmirtli of tin total number of horses nominated for the Churchill Downs main feature This shows what owners and trainers think of Oaklawn Park us a training ground for Derby horses anil while naturally some of those here will not start in the big event a majority of them are being prepared for it not only in workouts but in races as well wellThe The Derby candidates at the local track are Eternal and TJie Wanderer owned by James Mc ¬ Clelland American Ace which belongs to Edward Cobrian Cobweb and Kscovar owned by C AV Clark Mormon and Vancouver in the stable of Willis Sharpe Kilmer Farmingdale and Hagnarok which belong to 1 H Rosseter Kd Stone owned byr E AA Moore Sailor property of J H Bullock Guy of the I K Clark barn Bridesman owned by AV T Martin Inder Fire in the Pat Dunne es ¬ tablishment Skye Ball which belongs to F H Jickncll Drummond owned liy AA Shea and Frank Mattox which hails from L Marions stable stableJohn John Ixnve is training si trio of thoroughbreds for the big events American Ace Cobweb and Kscovar and he has two of them fit now to give a good account of themselves These are American Ace and Cobweb and the former looks especially good in view of his excellent performance the first time he was called on this spring Kscovar J ves otliPrDerbj eligible II K nevec started Imt hiatrinner regards him highly and if lie can over get him to stand training he says he will mnkeTa useful stake liorse Kscovar is a brown colt by Sweep Aaleureuse and with such breeding is lioiiiul to have good credentials credentialsIXMVC IXMVC tried to get him to the races last year but ho could not make it and he figured that a winters rest might help him and let him develop Ho lias grown to good proportions and is going along in his training till right now but Lowe has not worked him fast enough to hurt him AVImtever Escovar may lack in speed however American Ace and Cobweb make up for It seems like a certainty that Jx we will send at least one liorse to tln post in the Derby American Ace probably will go a long route and there is no tell ¬ ing but what Cobweb may be a stayer He 3ias never been sent over a long route but he opens up such a big gap on his opponents in sprint races that he is sure to be hard to catch if he is sent on onETERNAL ETERNAL CLOSELY SCRUTINIZED SCRUTINIZEDEvery Every move of the more important Derby candi ¬ dates is watched with keen interest by the race ¬ goers here especially Eternal and when the sturdy sou of Sweep Hazel Burke steps on the track in the mornings for a workout there is always a big crowd on hand to see him work He lias so far advanced in his training that lie fairly dazzles the work watchers and anything that he may do in the line of a fast gallop between now and Derby day would not surprise them themOne One thing in his favor is that he looks like a horse that will maintain his speed over a con ¬ siderable distance of ground In hi work he pulls up apparently as fresh as when he started and when a horse does this after running as fast as he does it is plainly evident that he has staying qualities qualitiesThe The AVanderer Eternals stablemate is not quite as far advanced in his training but he is coming to hand and it would not be surprising to see him go to the post iii the rich event His long rest has done him a world of good and both owner McCleliand and trainer Kim Patterson are confident that he will be a good horse this year yearOf Of the other Derby eligibles especially those which have started in races here it is a trifle early to tell whether they will pan out to be what their owners and trainers expect Mormon ran an excel ¬ lent race in his first start and so did American Acel Both of these horses are bound to improve with racing The Derby horses here will have plenty of chances to race l efore they get to Kentucky as racing secretary J B Campbell will rater to the bettor grade of threeyearolds nu ¬ merous times between now and the end of the meeting meetingThus Thus far the present Oaklawn Park meeting has been up to the standard of previous years in every respect and if anything it has been better from an attendance standpoint Men prominent in every walk of life are here enjoying the healing waters and as the only pastime is the racing they naturally visit the course as that is considered part of the Hot Springs routine at the present time To some of them racing is a stranger but many of the tourists are from sections where they get to see ilit thoroughbreds in action each year and they evince a keen interest in the snort here hereOFFICIAL OFFICIAL VIGILANCE THE RULE RULENever Never was a race meeting cleaner than the one here to date and judge Francis J Nelson and J B Campbell are determined to keep it that way Judge Nelson had a heart to heart talk with all of the jockeys on the opening day of the meeting lie told them that he was not going to spare any f them if they did not do their best at all times That the riders realize that the official meant just exactly what he said is plain to be seen as nose head and neck finishes are common and form has been better preserved than ever before beforeAmong Among the prominent visitors here is J H Rosseter millionaire California shipping man and a member of the United States shipping board Mn Rosseter hys a large stable of horses here in clmrjte of trainer Charles J Casey and he has had the pleasure of seeing his colors carried several times since his arrival Such a good sportsman is Mr Uosseter that in all probability he will have either Farmingdale or Itagnarok start in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby regardless of their chances to win as In Is desirous of having a representative in it He i loud in his praise of racing here and plans quite an extensive visit visitTrainer Trainer Karly AVright brought nine horses here for George AVlngfield wealthy Nevada sportsman wliose establishment bears the title of Nevada Stock Farm Eight of the nine are twoyearolds the only exception being Tombolo The youngsters in this stable are AVestwood San Diego Fort Churchill Ina AAood Lady AAood Forbid Benecia and St Allan With the exception of St Allan the others are all the progeny of Honeywood an English stal ¬ lion which is standing at Mr AVingfields farm St Allan is by Bridge of Allan AAright has the youngsters in his barn about ready for racing and they will be seen in action ere long longAV AV T Martin Long Bill has sixteen horses in training here and he had his stable at Oaklawn Park all winter Among those under his care are Midway and Bulse which are owned by J AV Parrish Midway Ky banker and which were cam ¬ paigned in the cast last fall by John AVard Mid ¬ way seems to have been benefited considerably by his rest here and he will be fit for racing much sooner this year than formerly Bulse will also probably be a better liorse this year than he was last and he is taking kindly to his work workPat Pat Dunne is looking after ten horses here five of his own and five Iwlonging to Jefferson Livingston Dunne has a Derby eligible in his stable Under Fire and the colt was a frequent winner at New Orleans The Livingston horses in his charge are Omond Florence Webber Muramon Mayor Inlvin and Military System Owner Liv ¬ ingston is visiting here but he has not got much to enthuse over among his own outfit as they are a poor band Trainer Jack McCorraack Jias the main division of the Livingston stable at Douglas Park
