WHITNEY DAY AT HAVRE His Derby Hope Vintiex Qualifies for Big Kentucky Race Scores Impressive Victory in Sus ¬ quehanna Handicap His Two YearOlds Also Win HAVRE DE GRACE Md April 20 It may have been well for Commander Ross grand racer Billy Kelly that he dodged the Susquehanna Handicap at Havre de Grace this afternoon This great three yearold was programmed with Cudgel and Fore ¬ ground as the Ross entry The Susquehanna was intended as a Derby trial but the race failed to fill with enough threeyearolds to make it a con ¬ test and so secretary Rehberger made it a handi ¬ cap for all ages trying to bring the good horses together Only two of the prospective Derby candi ¬ dates went to the post Vindex owned by Harry Payne Whitney and the Whitney hope for the Derby and Star Hampton owned by Walter M Jeffords whose reputation rests on the fact that he once beat Billy Kelly The others in the race were older horses Mr Whitney with a party of friends was down to see the performance of Vindex and he and his friends were highly gratified and amply rewarded when they saw the son of Victrix Belle fontaine canter home in front of the Ross entry Foreground Vindex qualified handsomely for the Kentucky race Carrying 113 pounds and giving weight to all his opponents under the scale he ran Star Hampton dizzy in the first eighth drew away into a long lead and was only cantering at the end to win the mile and seventy yards in 144 The fractional time was 23 48 113 140 There would have been a lot of satisfaction to the public had trainer Bedwell let Billy Kelly go to the post to meet Vindex The latters victory was impressive but it does not decide the Derby or any other threeyearold race Vindex did not race much last year He started four times winning once As a threeyearold Vindex has come back a fine looking horse He has all the points of a great horse and his performance today certainly indicates that he may go on to great things In the Susquehanna when he pulled up he was hardly taking a long breath He raced as if ho would go on for any distance and Mr Whitney and his trainer Rowe were much pleased at the colts performance Star Hamptons showing was greatly disappointing to trainer Mike Daly DalySANDE SANDE RIDES TWO WINNERS WINNERSIt It was a great day for the Whitney colors for in addition to Vlndexs victory the stable entry Querca and Panoply finished first and second respectively in the twoyearold race that opened the days proceedings The largest crowd of the season was present and witnessed some excellent racing Sande rode the winners of the last two races Murphy and Ballast BallastThe The sprinter Subahdar is back in the Triple Springs Farm Stable Two claims were lodged for the horse on Wednesday last one by J W Bean and another by James Boden The latter was the trainer of the horse and as he is not an authorised agent his claim was thrown out Boden appealed to the stewards claiming that according to a new rule passed by the Jockey Club anyone could claim a horse Investigation found that the appeal was well based with the result that Bean was ordered to return the horse back to his former owner ownerIt It is said that Sir Barton and not Billy Kelly will be Commander J K L Ross representative in the Kentucky Derby Sir Bartons trial over tin Havre de Grace track yesterday was an impressive move and should take some beating in the big race Bedwell himself has made no positive announce ¬ ment of his plans and it may be that both will be shipped to Kentucky today todayS S C Hildreths string of nine horses which ar ¬ rived at Pimlico on Friday included the two Prcak ness eligibles Cirrus and Purchase Both colts have come out of winter quarters much improved in appearance and are highly regarded by their astuto ownertrainer Another Preakuess eligible to arrive from Belmont Park was P A Clarks Dunboyne which also looks in forward condition conditionThree Three horses changed hands on Friday through the claiming route Sam Louis took the filly Hidden Ship from the Kentucky Stable for 2005 G W Forman secured Sedgegrass out of the same race for 1015 and Forman also claimed Prunes winner of the seventh race for 1415 1415Wash Wash Norvell was a visitor at the Havre do Grace track yesterday He was an arrival from Toronto Canada where he went after the conclu ¬ sion of the Hot Springs meeting He brings en ¬ couraging news to the horsemen that racing will likely be resumed in the Dominion in the near future futureThe The apprentice jockey Coltiletti under contract to S A Clopton rode his first winner when hu landed Sylvano home in front of his opponents in the sixtli race Friday It was the fiftli nice in which the lad had ridden and a number of astute horse ¬ men predict a bright future for the boy
