IMPROVEMENTS FOR BELMONT PARK Some 50000 to Be Spent This Year in Remodelling the Big Stand XEW YORK X Y May 2S Belmont Park faces a problem in hov to take care of the thou ¬ sands that will flock to the course on Memorial Day if the weather is fine to see the running of the HandicapOn Suburban Handicap On the big days of last year the accommodations at Bilmont Park were inadequate since the fire which destroyed a large portion of the grandstand but it was only the certainty of even larger crowd this year that has led to a belated decision on tin part of the officials of the Westchester Racing Association to repair the ravages wrought by the fire and increase the capacity of the stands Major Belmont who though he did not attend the races on the opening day on account of the recent death of his son was present in the morning and realized the meager seating accommodations for the crowd expected He spent several hours in looking over the plant and announced that 50000 would be spent in improvements which will be made before the SeptemberBoth fall meeting in September Both the grandstand and the clubhouse stand will be extended toward the lawn to the extremity of the roof girders The boxes will be brought for ¬ ward in the same manner as at Saratoga leaving room for thousands more seats at the back of tin stand and a spacious promenade where many more thousands can stand if necessary in comparative comfort The grandstand restaurant which since the fire has been poked away in a corner of the stand will be moved to the middle of the structure and the general improvements will include repairs to the back of the stand which was unsightly ami gloomylooking during last season
