THE BROOK CHAMPION STEEPLECHASER J E Griffiths Star Best of the Present Day Jump ¬ ers Big Sum Offered for Him NEW YORK N Y May 29 After The Brook won the International Steeplechase at Belmont Park Monday W L Powers remarked that he outclassed all the other jumpers in training as far as Sir Barton outclasses the threeyearolds His form last year indicated it and his winning races this year are confirming it I would call him the best stee ¬ plechaser PlentyW we have had since Good and Plenty W S Vosburgh tlie official handlcapper of the Jockey Club evidently shared the opinion of Mr Powers when allotting the weights for tlie race for he put 107 pounds on The Brook which is more weight than any winner had carried since the In ¬ ternational Steeplechase was first run at Morris Park in 1897 1897The The Brook was brought from Ireland by T J Douohuc about three years ago for H M Sage of Albany and started on the flat as late as a year ago when Major Maxwell Stevenson rode him to victory in the International Military race at Bel ¬ mont Park Terminal on May 25 J E Griffith who now owns him is a member of the Maryland Jockey Club and a prominent Baltimore business man manThe The Brook was champion jumper of last year when he won nine races out of fourteen sjarts and earnoU 17410 in stakes mid purses Commander J K L Ross tried to biiy him lastfall He sought out Mr Griffith and asked him to put a price on his horse horseI I am not a wealthy man said Mr Griffith but I like a good horse as well as any man and I believe I can afford to keep this one Thanks for the offer but I wont sell During the winter Mr Griffith was offered 13000 for his champion and it is said received an offer of 25000 for him this spring which was also turned down downThe The Brook is a small horse He does not look an inch over 152 hands high but be is full made and powerful with the fine head crested neck and high set jauntily carried fciil of an Arab Few hand ¬ somer horses have been seen
