Louisville The large sum of 225 G was distributed in stakes and purses to the winning horsemen participat ¬ ing in the lirst spring meeting hehl at Churchill Downs under the auspices of the Kentucky Jockey Club Tliis surpassed all previous words In the long history f Louisvilles most noted race course as did the daily attendance and voliiin of speculation in the intttiiels Great in every respect was the meeting which began May 10 and en ieto tin end May 31 embracing nineteen days during whicli time 134 raees were decided and an averaj Of 11878 distributed daily The Kentucky Derby was as it always lias been the principal feature if tlie mooting and attracted more attention tlian ever before bringing to Louisville people from all i rts of tjie country in such large numbers that Churchill Downs proved en ¬ tirely too small to accommodate all who desired to witness the famous nice The transfer of the Ken ¬ tucky Handicap to the Downs gave that track another noted race that attracted a crowd of almost Derby day proportions The increased value of the stakes and overnight purses served to bring many of the best horses in the country to the Downs with the result that the racing was of
