SARATOGA IS NOW IN ORDER Many Improvements on the Track and Grounds Have Been Made Sir Barton and Purchase Likely Likelyto to Meet in the Eenner and andOther Other Stakes SARATOGA SPRINGS N T July 20 This community is ready and eager to extend a hearty welcome to the sportloving throngs which find Saratoga the most attractive summer resort in the United States during the month of August AugustThe The hotels many of which are under new man ¬ agement have been renovated and the early arrivals report a greatly improved service over conditions which prevailed during the war period A new lighting system on Broadway will make New York ¬ ers forget their own Great White Way while 60000 has been spent in fitting up a theatre on Spring street adjoining the Hathorn Reservation where the best plays and pictures will be offered during the month of August AugustPresident President Richard T Wilson who has been here for two weeks is authority for the statement that nothing has been overlooked tending to increase the comforts of the thousands who have found the an ¬ nual meeting of the Saratoga Association for the Improvement of the Breed jof Horses an ideal form ot rnrtdoorjenjoymtnt Thetlnbhonseaiii1b f en larged by an eightfoot addition on three sides giving much needed space in a section where fash ¬ ion has been wont to congregate daily to lunch gossip and admire the horses An ornamental iron fence now surrounds the judges stand and divides the club enclosure from the lawn while a new entrance has been made for horses stabling at Horse Haven by which means they will be enabled to reach the paddock without encountering the throng of automobiles and their accompanying dangers at the main gate This new entrance will be used exclusively for horses and they will reach the paddock by way of the main course courseOne One of the most appreciated changes wrought this season is the conversion of the building at Union Jind East avenues into a shelter and waiting room for patrons who in former years had to brave the elements while waiting means of transportation after the races There will be a general cleaning up of this region now that the property has passed into the control of the association associationTBACK TBACK IN OBDEB GBOUNDS BEAUTIFIED BEAUTIFIEDSuperintendent Superintendent William Clare who learned the business of track care under the watchful eye of his father at Brighton Beach has both the main and Horse Haven courses in splendid condition He has also given the steeplechase course considerable attention and the footing will not be as hard as in 1918 The borders of the lake have been sodded the flowers and shrubs are at their best and the walks and roads are as trim as one would expect to find them at this Ascot of America Even Horse Haven has not been overlooked in the era of im ¬ provement ns a new iron fence has been built along the East avenue end of the property which is now skirted by rows of stabling in gleaming jackets of whitewash whitewashTaking Taking the attendance at the metropolitan courses as a guide said president Wilson I be live that we shall have the most successful season in our history With the war over people are hun ¬ gry for recreation None of the outdoor sports car ¬ ries as strong an appeal as racing It is a spectacle which stirs the hearts of all and has its devotees in every walk of life Besides the thrill these con ¬ tests between the best horses the world can pro ¬ duce you know many of your best thoroughbreds are foreignbred there is a knowledge that in the promotion of these racing tests we are doing a service for the country at large as they are essential in the matter of horse breeding breedingThere There has always been great rivalry between the east and the west in the production of good race horses continued Mr Wilson and Saratoga is the proving ground where these great tests have been decided since the days of Longfellow and Harry Bassett Last year the west sent us a great per ¬ former in Billy Kelly and gossip has it that the east will have to look to its laurels again this year in the twoyearold stakes These rivalries make for progress in the breeding industry and here at Saratoga a fair field is afforded for their de ¬ cision cisionFor For the opening day Friday August 1 there Is the historic Flash Stakes first run for in 1860 for twoyearolds and the Saratoga Handicap for threeyearolds and over at one mile and a quarter Ou Saturday the pick of the twoyearolds and the best of the threeyearolds have engagements in the United States Hotel and Kenner Stakes
