HANNIBAL MAKES DECIDED IMPRESSION Wilson Colt Looms Up as Formidable Factor in the Three Year Old Division BY EDWARD W COLE COLESARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 14 Now that R T Wilsons threeyearold Hannibal has demonstrated he is not averse to racing on a fast and hard track he can be considered a decided factor in the threeyearold division In beating War Pennant so easily he is entitled to more than ordl nary distinction for did not War Pennant establish his standing when he pushed out Naturalist and Star Master to their limit to beat him a few days ago It is doubtful however if War Pennant is decidedly at his best for many times his trainer Guy Bedwell has declared him to be a superior horse to either Billy Kelly or Sir Barton This fact he has shown more than once in his private trials trialsThe The change in disposition of Hannibal from a pronounced mud performer as a twoyearold to a rare good fast track colt can probably be credited to the untiring care and attention his trainer Tom Healcy has given the colt In the early spring of 1918 R T Wilson declared he had a good horse in Hannibal but he never came up to his owners predictions excepting when he beat Terentia in the Saratoga Special last year over a heavy course and priorto that when he won the Keene Memorial at Belmont Park also over a heavy course These records show that either his legs or feet bothered him last year on a fast track Tom Healey has evidently diagnosed his case and become its master masterliannibal liannibal won his race from the drop of the hat yesterday and so impressively that he looms up as a factor with Purchase in future races for threeyearolds He covered a mile in 137 without being extended la the Saratoga HandlcapJou tiie opening day Purchase ran the first mile In 138 with only one pound more on his back than Hanni ¬ bal carried Purchase was never fully extended in his race neither was Hannibal Both are eligible for the Saranac Handicap at a mile to be run August 20 the Huron Handicap on August 2G at a mile and threesixteenths and the Saratoga Cup at a mile and threequarters on August 30 the clos ¬ ing day of the meeting meetingStarter Starter Cassidys physician reports his patients condition favorable and he will probably be at his post tomorrow in case he has sufficiently recovered However James Milton has been sent for and is now on his way here to substitute until Cassidy is available availableThat That Clarence Mackay is retiring from the turf Is assured from the fact that he recently has sold his entire breeding establishment in France in ¬ cluding his stallion Fitz Herbert Chas Hill who has acted as agent for Mr Mackay for several years said that the French estate had been entirely disposed of including the grounds and all the stock within the past thirty days
