CELT SUCCESSFUL AS RACER AND SIRE One of the Best Ever Sent Out of Famous Castleton Stud His Record and Pedigree. A. B. Hancock, and incidentally the American turf, lost one of the most successful sires of recent ; years v. hen Celt died at Mr. Hancocks Kllerslie Stud in Virginia. At the recent yearling sales at Saratoga seventeen sons and daughters of Celt sold for a total of 05,300, convincing evidence of the popularity of that young stallion and the demand for his progeny. Celt was a chestnut horse by Commando Maid of Erin and was bred by the late James It. Keene at his famous Castleton Stud in Kentucky. By common consent and by proof of his racing, Celt was one of the best racers ever sent out from Castleton and but little inferior to his invincible stablemate, Colin. Unluckily early lameness interfered with a brilliant career on the track and enforced his too early retirement to the stud. He was not raced much, having started in but six races, twice as a two-year-old, twice as a three-year-old and twice as a four-year-old.- As a two-year-old he ran second to Coiiu in the Flatbush Stakes at Sheepshead Bay and won the Junior Champion Stakes at Gravesend, defeating Uncle, Meelick and Firestone. As a three-year-old he won the .Jockey Club Weight-for-Age Race at Belmont Park, defeating Jack Atkin and Dorante at a mile and an eighth, run in 1:52. Then he won the Brooklyn Handicap, with 108 pounds up,, with great ease in 2:04 . with Fair Play, 09 pounds, second; Master Robert, 95, third, and King James, 9S, lapped on Master Robert, fourth. Then he spread a hoof and retired for the year. The following spring he was reported to be a sound horse and trained favorably. He made his first appearance in a race for a purse at Belmont -Pnrk-Mayfs27 ami won, - in ni :-Cnnterr:froin Choirmaster of Chesterbrook and Homecrest. This was in the way of-preparation for the Brooklyn Handicap, run June 3. He was a 1 to 3 favorite, but King James" won, with Restigouelie second and Celt a badly beaten but game third. Shortly after the race it was discovered that his old infirmity had beset him again. A persistent but vain effort to restore him to raping condition was made. Finally his case was given up as hopeless and lie was retired to the stud. His racing record follows: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. During the past seven years he sent 148 representatives to the track and they won 255 races, earning for their owners the goodly sum of 45,240. Celts record in the stud is here shown by years: Year.
