Hopeful Stakes of 0,000 the Richest Two-Year-Old Mace of the Year While not invested with the historical lore that attaches to the Futurity, the Hopeful Stakes, because of its great monetary value, has become one of the most coveted and popular two-year-old features of eastern racing. Established in 1003, Delhi won its first running, and the winners share amounted to .2,275. The year following when Tanya won the net value was considerably larger, 9,700 going to the winner. In the subsequent years from 1005 to 1010, inclusive, "the liiiancial pickings were less, ranging in value from 9,140 down to 0,990, while during the three lean years of the turf 1913-14-15 as far as New York racing was concerned, the winners received less than 0,000. However, in 1910 the Hopeful was restored to its old standing in a monetary way, Campfire winning and earning for his owner, R. T. Wilson, the goodly sum of S,S50. In 1917 Sun Briar won and the race was worth 0,000 to the winner. Last year Eternal was the successful one and his victory enriched the McClelland stable to the extent of 0,150. With such princely and tempting monetary returns it is not at all surprising that all the most promising two-year-olds of each year arc nominated for this rich stake. Such has been the case in past years and it is true of the entries for this years running, for which the Saratoga Racing Association has guaranteed the gross value to bo 0,000. The Hopeful is scheduled for decision on the closing day of. the Saratoga meeting and, with few exceptions, all the crack youngsters of 1919 are among the probable starters in this most valuable two-year-bid race of the year, in fact, the richest of all stakes with one exception, the 0,000 Latonia Championship, to be decided at Latonia next fall. The conditions of this much coveted event, the nominators and their entries are as follows: HOPEFUL STAKES of 0,000 For two-year-olds. By subscription of 0 each.
