GENERAL NEWS NOTES OF THE DAY CHICAGO, HI., August 27. AAeather forecast: Illinois Generally fair in north and central; unsettled, probably showers in extreme south portion tonight and Thursday; not much change in temperature. Missouri Unsettled weather tonight and Thursday; probably showers; not much change in temperature. General forecast: The indications are for fair weather in the western lake region and the Upper Mississippi Aalley during the next thirty-six hours, while there will be considerable cloudiness to the southward and westward, with showers from North Dakota southeastward to Missouri. There will be little change in temperature. AAASHINGTON, D. .C, August 27. President AAilson will start on his speechmakinc tour of the country within ten days unless lie completely revises his present decision. A definite announcement of the Presidents plans will be forthcoming as soon as the details can be completed, including a slight change in the itinerary. The first stop on the trip will be in Ohio, either at Cincinnati or Columbus, and the tour is to include Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, St. Paul and Minneapolis and thence to the Pacific coast by the northern route and back again via the mountain states. The President also is expected to speak at Sioux City, Iowa. It will last at least twenty-five days. WASHINGTON, D. C, August 27. Favorable report on Attorney General Palmers request for amendments to the food control act to assist him in the prosecution of profiteers was made to the Senate today by Senator Gronna of North Dakota, .hairman of the agricultural committee. Senator Gronna stated that the request that the report was not a unanimous one and that members of the committee had reserved the right to further amendments on the floor. I ALII ART, Texas, August 27. AA S. Ford, engineer, and Rex Mathews, fireman, of the Golden State Limited on the Rock Island, bound for Chicago, were killed and an. unidentified postal clerk seriously injured when the limited turned over thirteen miles east of Tucumcari, N. M., at 5:30 a. m. today, according to a special dispatch received by the El Paso Herald. No passengers wore injured, as far as is known. BERLIN. Germany, Aug. 27. Dr. Daniel ATon Haimhausen, former counselor of the German embassy at AAashington lias been selected for appointment as German ambassador to the United States, according to authoritative information today. Dr. W. S. Solf, secretary for the colonies, is the selection for the ambassadorship to Great Britain, and Herr Kadowitz for the ambassadorship to China. MINEOLA, N. X., August 27. Three aviators arrived here from Toronto this morning, completing the round trip in the international air race. Lieut. Robert H. Midkiff estimated his actual flying time as nine hours and fifty-one minutes. He carried Scrgt. Melville as a passenger. The other finishers wero J3apt. A. E. Simonon with Maj. Henry Miller as a passenger, and Lieut. AA. C. F. Brown with Lieut. Daniel 15. Gish as a passenger. NEW YORK, N. Y., August 27. Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the board of the United States Steel Corporation, made public today a communication sent by him to a committee of the American Federation of Labor, which is organizing workers in the iron and steel industry, assorting that his corporation would refuse to discuss business relations witli trade unions as such and was opposed to the closed shop. MISSOULA, Mont., Aug. 27. The four fires in the Beaver, ridge country, in the Powell region, have joined into one huge blaze ten iniles on its longest front and five miles wide, making the situation in that part of the Lolo forest extremely threatening, according to word received by forest officials here.
