ROMANCE OF THE PANTHERS BREEDING Chance played a great part in the parentage of Amphion, sire of Sundridge, and touching on this in a recent issue of the Manchester Sporting Chronicle. Mankato had the following concerning how Countess 55ia came to be mated with Tracery, the result being The Panther: "Soon after Tracery went to the Southcourt Stud his owner, Mr. Rolmont, intimated to Mr. Ashby that he would like to obtain from Colonel Hall Walker a subscription to White Eagle in exchange Tor one to Tracery. Mr. Ashby, accordingly, got into touch witli his old friend Mr. Chisnion, who discussed the proposal with Colonel Hall Walker, and suggested that Countess Zia should be sent to Southcourt. "The Colonel was agreeable, and so in 1915, after foaling the filly Chanor to Count Schomberg, Countess Zia was mated with Tracery, and, heavy in foal, was included in the mares presented bv Colonel Hall Walker to the nation. Her offspring, I need hardly add, is The Ianther. "To add to the romance of the episode, Mr. Chisnion is inclined to think tiiat Mr. Belmont lias not yet sent a mare to fill his reciprocal nomination. If this be so. The Ianther has the unique distinction for a classic winner of having cost nothing getting, and of having been given away when in the uterus of his dam. This year Countess Zia was agaiu mated with Tracery.
