CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF The English jockey George Fordham. a great horseman and second only in fame to Fred Archer as a rider during his career, rode 2.5S7 winners. It turns out that Stefan the Great wrenched his fetlock in the course of the English Two Thousand Guineas race, which explains his poor running. Up to that time his owner was hopeful of winning the Derby with the gray, which was not, however, able to start in the event. For some years there lias been a diampiou Cheshire cheese for .each owner of the laced horses in the English Chester Cup, but the food controller, in reply to a request for the custom to be followed this year, declined, on the ground of tho shortage and adding that "all. cheese wifs required for those engaged in heavy work." The Spanish Derby, run for at the Madrid course of Aranjuez, was won by King Alfonsos Mont-mirael, a . FreneIt-colt by Bonsplel. At the same meeting the Tdng won another race by the aid of Slenthe, a daughter of the famous Rose do Mai.-Altogether the royal, colors were successful in eight races in the first months of the racing season in Spain.
