LATONIA RACETRACK VISITED BY RAIN Hcrcemen and Horses Arriving in Throngs Death of Old-Time Owner Much Regretted. CINCINNATI, O., September 22. Heavy rain this morning interfered considerably with action at the 1-atoiiia track and caused inconvenience for .the numerous and steadily arriving horsemen and their horses. However, all were sungly housed, and they are now awaiting the call of the bugle that will send the twenty-two days meeting here on its way. There never was brighter prospects for an autumn racing meeting than that of the one impending here. Local interest is greater than before, and the daily attendance of early October is certain, to be swelled by the large concourse of people who will come from all parts of the country to witness the opening games of the worlds series baseball games. Cincinnati won the toss for the opening two games, and there will be man;.- of the visitors remaining in this section while the ball teams are battling it out in Chicago in three games before returning here for the next two games. The advance guard of eastern campaigned racers readied the track this morning when the Ogden Stable Henderson and Lester arrived from Havre de Grace. Jockey C. Robinson, who is under contract to the stable, came from Lexington. AH the improvements are completed, and the numerous changes have put a new complexion on the plant. It is vastly more roomy than formerly, and in its present state it is hound to eliminate the crowding so noticeable on former big days. There was genuine regret among the horseni"n and racing followers when it was learned that Jake Marklein. identified with the turf for many years and a conspicuous figure at most courses, died Sat; unlay because of an infection in one of his toes, which first made its appearance during the Saratoga meeting. He will be buried tomorrow in Cincinnati. Mr. Marklein owned some well-known horses during his connection with the turf and was also prominent in Cincinnati politics. Kay Spence is considerably concerned over his failure to hear from the three grooms and two exercise boys that he sent to Havana recently to take up a band of horses he has turned out there. They sailed on the Mascotte and he has been unable to get word as to their safe arrival. The Mascotte is said to have been in the hurricane which raged with such velocity and destruction recently.
