Two Great Rival Three -Year -Olds Sir Barton a Decided Leader in Money Won, But Purchase Makes a Good Showing in the Same Line It is quite certain that we have two three-year-old colts of extraordinary merit in our racing this year in Sir Barton and Purchase. Which is the better of the pair is a question open to debate. Their only meeting was in the Dwycr Stakes at Aqueduct July 10 and then Purchase was an easy winner, but had the great advantage of only 118 pounds on his hack to 1127 on Sir Bartons. Nothing but a contest at even weights could be held decisive of superiority here. In one matter Sir Barton is easily first, and that is in money won. He has been raced conservatively and has only started in eight races, but these included such chief prizes of the year as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Withers and Belmont Stakes and the Potomac Handicap, the net result being the huge sum of 3,450 already won this year. He is still engaged in a number of rich stakes and it is quite within the range of probability that Ins earnings may reach the 00,000 mark before the Maryland fall campaign terminates. It speaks volumes for Lady Sterling as a brood mare that she is the dam of two such superior racers as Sir Martin and Sir Barton. Sir Bartons record to date is: Date. Race. Fin. Track. Distance. Time. Value. Mav 10 Kentucky Derby 1 Churchill Downs. .1 1-4 2:09 0,825 May 14 Preakness Stakes 1 Pimlico 1 1-S 1:53 24,500 May 24 Withers Stakes 1 Belmont Park ...1 1:38 8,075 June 11 Belmont Stakes 1 Belmont Park ...1 3-S 2:17 11,950 July 10 Dwycr Stakes 2 Aqueduct 1 1-8 ....1:52 700 Sept. 11 Purse 2.... His two defeats were squarely inflicted in races of great merit. With 105 pounds on his back to 117 on Purchase, Eternal beat him easily in the Brooklyn Handicap, but found it necessary to run its first mile in 1:35 and its full distance of a mile and an eighth in 1:49 in order to do so. Exterminator took his measure in the Saratoga Cup, but no horse is immune from defeat by sturdy Exterminator and Purchase ran a grand race in finishing a close second in track record time on a slow track. One of his races was a walkover; the others were successes in which he displayed a grand order of speed and ability to carry weight in a way leaving nothing to be desired. As an earner of money he has not had Sir Bartons opportunities in the richer stakes of the year, but he has done quite well notwithstanding, as the following record shows: Race Fin. Track. Distance.
