SIR BARTONS BfST RACE Crack Colt Scores Impressively in Maryland Handicap. Laurel Racing High Class and Spirited Leochares Defeat a Big Surprise. -. LAUREL, Md., October 4. Commander .T. K. L. Ross great three-year-old Sir Barton ran iirobably the best race of his career when lie won the 0,000 Maryland Handicap, a dash of a mile and a quarter, for three-year-olds, with ,750 to the winner. Sir Barton carried 133 pounds and ran the distance in 2:02.. Loftus rode the colt with splendid judgment, avoiding the terrific early pace and waiting until entering the homestretch before making his effort. In the stretch run he went to the leaders with a rush, and at the finish won going away. This was the fourth 10,000 stake that the Ross horses won in Maryland this fall. S. C. Hildreths Mad Hatter, a prominent contender for the 50,000 Latonia Championship Stakes, to be run at Latonia next Saturday, displayed remarkable speed in pacemaking, but was no match for Sir Barton when the latter challenged, tiring badly from his strenuous early efforts. Be Franks race was far below expectations, while Audacious per-performed in meritorious fashion, outgaming Thunderclap for third money. Pleasing weather and the excellent program provided served to attract to Laurel Park a capacity attendance. Ledchares defeat in the secondary, attraction, a dash "of one mile, was the outstanding incident of an afternoon of spirited racing. Leoehares -vas topweight in- this -race,.,, and his .overthrow was; brought, about by his riders effdrtsto" dispose of Papp; with the result that when the lightly-weighted Duchess Lace made her move Leoehares had nothing left to withstand the final rush of the three-year-old. AVodfln was another disappointing favorite, the Utterback racer losing the fifth race in the final strides of a closely contested finish, in which Widow Bedotte got the decision by a small margin. The consistent long-distance racer Thrift added another victory to his row of successes when he easily accounted for the final race of the day. Thrift hns won six out of his last eight starts and nil his victories were at the distance of a mile and a quarter. II. P. Whitneys Broomstick colt Wildair proved too speedy for Carmandale, his only real opponent in the opening dash. Ambrose sent "Wildair into a safe lead in the first eighth and the colt easily maintained it to the end, with Carmandale in game but unavailing pursuit. The steeplechase furnished a thrilling finish. Dobadou, while holding a good lead, made a bad landing at the twelfth fence and appeared, beaten when old Weldship raced away into a big lead immediately after the mishap. However, Debadou recovered quickly, and taking after Weldship caught the latter tiring and turned defeat into victory, the spectators cheering wildly as the Greentree Stables popular colors flashed -in front in the final strides. Vincent Powers rode one of his old-time finishes on the winner, such as he did in the days when liq was the leading rider on the flat in this coun-trv. YV. .T. Salmons two-year-olds Hobey Baker and Mv Laddie will be shinped from Jamaica to Laurel to run in the National Handicap of ".,000, to be run on Wednesday. The Salmon youngsters went to Jamaica from Havre de Grace, where Mr. Salmon will winter his horses. There were 134 nominations for the National. Another youngster that will probably come down to run in the National is J. E. Wideners Pilgrim. S. C. Hildreth is anxious to send Purchase against Sir Barton at weight for age, each to carry 120 pounds, and it is not unlikely that a special race "may be framed to bring these two great horses together. The Hildreth horses were a little knocked out after their arrival at Laurel, but all are doing famously now and they will be seen frequently in races from now on. Weights for the Annapolis Handicap, a stake for three-year-olds and upward at a mile and a half, will be announced by handicapper Bryan on Monday. In the list of ninety-six nominations for the race are all the best handicap horses in training. The Annapolis will be run on Saturday, October 11. The National and the Annapolis are the only stakes, to be run the coming week, but there will be u number of overnight handicaps to attract the top-notehers. The conditions of the fiftli race Monday call for the horses to be ridden by jockeys who have never won a race and the Maryland State Fair Association will present S50 to the winning rider. The third race, a handicap at three-quarters of a mile, fell to Samuel Ross Crank, the favorite, but after a stubbornly contested finish, in which Jack Stuart seriously threatened and just failed to. get up. Out the way set a dazzling pace for five-eighths, but tired, and Crank went to the front. Only to lte forced to the limit to beat Jack Stuart.
