KENTUCKY FALL SEASON NEARING END Most Successful Racing Year Will Close -with Great Meeting- at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., October IS. The most successful fall season of thoroughbred horse racing that has ever been promoted in Kentucky, a season that has been marSed by the inaugural running of the 0,000 Latonia Championship, a race of one mile and three-quarters for three-year-olds, that is destined to become one of the most popular of American long distance specials, that has been signalized by a brilliant renewal of the Latonia Autumn Cup, a ,500 race of two miles and a quarter for three-year-olds and over, and has yet to witness the renewal at picturesque Churchill Dowus of the ,000 Louisville Cup, at two miles, that will bring to-geiner. for another test of endurance as well as speed, the pick of American long distance runners, will come to a close at Churchill Downs on Novembei 1. In other years Latonia has finished Kentuckys fall racing. But the Kentucky Jockey Club, which now controls racing in the Blue Grass state, elected in the spring to give Latonia the old place of the Louisville tracks in the date schedule and shift the distinction of winding up the year to Churchill Downs, and the new arrangement has proved eminently satisfactory to horsemen and tremendously popular with the patrons of the sport. The final meeting at Churchill Downs will begin on October 23 and continue through the 1st of November. There will be nine racing days all told, and the sport at. Churchill Downs will bo maintained -by the strongest stables that are now tit Latonia, reinforced by several from the east. Commander Ross has named Cudgel for the Louisville Cup and the Falls City Handicap, War Pennant for the Cup and Handicap, and Boniface for the Falls City. Cudgel is no .stranger to patrons -of Kentucky racing. It was in Kentucky a couple of years back that the son of Broomstick Eugenia Burch made the brilliant reputation that moved Commander Ross to pav John W. Schorr 0,000 for him. A year ago last spring Cudgel defeated a first-class band in the 0,000 Kentucky Handicap. Cudgel came west for the Kentucky Handicap of last spring, but heavy going prevented his starting against Midway and Exterminator. Boniface, a long distance running son of Transvaal, is another graduate of Kentucky racing. Commander Ross has Constancy, an imported daughter of Ambassador, for which he paid Arthur B. Hancock 5,000 at Saratoga in August, in the Golden Rod Handicap. Constancy has won the Spinaway at Saratoga and the 0,000 Eastern Shore Stakes at Havre de Grace. She is generally regarded in the east as the mpstV fprmidable of; American two-year-old fillies. LUCULLITE MAY COME WEST, Hildreth, wiiose Fair Play three-year-old Mad Hatter won the first Latonia Championship in brilliant fashion, has Valor and Lucullite in the Falls City Handicap. He will have nothing for the Louisville Cup. Both of his Cup nominations Purchase and Cirrus have gone -wrong. Purchase pulled up lame after galloping at Laurel Park last week and has been put by for the year. Cirrus bowed a tendon at Saratoga. Lucullite. a son of Trap Rock Lucky Lass, is considered in the east the best of American four-year-olds. After nearly a year of non-productiveness, occasioned by an injury sustained from the heels of Rosie OGrady a vicious kicker at the start of the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in August, 1017, Lucullite came into his own last spring. He has been practically unbeatable at one mile and one mile and an eighth all fall. At Belmont Park he ran a mile in better than 1:37. In. the Aqueduct Handicap he shouldered 133 pounds and ran a mile and an eighth in 1:40, and in the Edgemere, another Aqueduct feature, he shouldered 135 pounds and ran a mile and an eighth in 1:50 flat. Hildreth believes that Lucullite will maintain his speed any distance, also that the going at Churchill Downs will suit him. David Leary, the man who brought Mad Hatter west for the Latonia Championship and saddled him last Saturday, may bring Lucullite and Valor west for the Falls City Handicap. James Rowc, manager of the racing and breeding establishments of Mr. Whitney, is expected to send the Peter Pan filly Vexatious, winner at Saratoga of the historic Alabama Stakes, to Churchill Downs for the Falls City Handicap and the Louisville Cup. His representatives in the Golden Rod Stakes will be the two-year-olds Rowes Bud and Furbelow, which are in the division of the Whitney stable Mose Goldblatt is campaigning in Kentuckv. When Vexatious arrives in Kentucky the westerners will see the best three-year-old filly of the season of 1019. A splendid individual this daughter of Peter Pan Contrary, whose mr.ternal granddam was a sister to Stalwart, greatest of the long-distance running sons of Meddler, galloped Milkmaid to defeat in the Alabama Stakes. Vexatious threw her jockey at the post before the start of a race at Laurel Park the other day, and Rowe had to let up on her. But she has recovered her poise, and with her poise her speed. Churchill Downs autumn features the Falls City Handicap, the Golden Rod Stakes and the Louisville Cup will be run on October 23, October 25 and November 1, respectively. The Golden Rod and Falls City will each have an added money value of ,000. The Louisville Cup, as already related, will pay ,000 in added money.
