PRESENT RECORDS OF THE THIRTY LEADING MONEY-WINNING HORSES OF THIS YEAR, WITH i, M MAN O WAR THE LEADER . r - Perusal of the money-winning accounts of the horses of the present year serves to show that a nsin-bcr of then! imve already mode unusually fat returns to their lucky owners. Last year Eternals 07137 was the top sum for the year, but the record of-1919 to date shows Man o War nnd Sir Barton far in advance of that record, while Mad Hatter is pressing it closely. Just at present the splendid two-year-old Man o War is the leader with his imposing total of SS3,325, but he is in retirement and Sir Barton is so close to him in money won that, barring some disabling accident, it seems a certainty this greatest son of Star Shoot will be the leader when Maryland racing comes to an end. He is still in a number of rich stake races at" Laurel and Pimlico, one of which appears a gift to him now. It may be found in the windup that he will be pressing the 00,000 mark closely, if he does not pass it. These two leaders of the present are truly magnificent young specimens of the thoroughbred in ills highest development and emphatically the best of their respective ages. Mad -Hatter came west from Laurel and won the greatest money race of the year when he cantered home in front of Sway and Stockweil in the first running of the Latonia Championship Stakes. To this he owes his third place iu the winning list. How scanty his chance would have been had Sir Barton been in the big race can be gleaned from the fact that Sir Barton gave him twenty-seven pounds and an easy beating in the Maryland Handicap Just one week previous to the running of the Championship. However, he is a good colt and may be much better next year. It is not to be overlooked that ho finished in front of Audacious, Thunderclap and Be Frank in that race. Purchase, the other great three-year-old ofnjthe year, did not have Sir Bartons chance nt the richer stake races of "the year, but did well with what he had and is fourth, followed by the other three-year-olds Vexatious and Be Frank. Next to them conies the four-year-old Exterminator, leader of tlte elder division. Billy Kelly, Naturalist, Miss Jemima and Constancy show pleasing totals won. Cudgel has not done as well as was expected from him and is not such a superexcellent race horse as he was in .1918, but a great one nevertheless.
