LAURELS BANNER PROGRAM . Large Crowd Present Despite Unfavorable Weather Conditions. The Porter Easily Wins Laurel Stakes, Defeating High-Class Opposition. LAUREL, lid., October 25. The Maryland State Fair offered its patrons the banner program of the meeting this afternoon and, despite unfavorable weather conditions, large crowd made the trip from Baltimore and Washingtodn to witness the sport. The best field that has started in a race this fall went to the post in the Laurel Stakes of ,500 added. S. C. Hildreths entry, Lucullite, on the strength of the great reputation earned on the metropolitan courses, was strongly supported and went to the post an even money favorite. He cut but little figure in the running and finished fourth. K. 15. McLeans honest little racer, The Porter, proved easily best and won off by himself by eight lengths. The race was a keen contest for the first half mile, Billy Kelly, Sun Briar and The Porter running heads apart and setting a terrific pace in the going. Bounding the far turn The Porter shook off his opponents and drew away into a commanding lead and for the remainder of the race the result was never in doubt. Billy Kelly was second, four lengths in front of Sun Briar, which in turn beat Lucullite seven lengths. The latter appeared unable to untrack himself in the going. Colin Campbell, the moving spirit in the Montreal Jockey Club, witnessed the running of the stakes from the stewards stand, whose guest he was during the afternoon. ..The three-quarters of a mile handicap for all. ages, run as the fiftli race, brought together four fast racers, witli Royce Rools the pronounced favorite. The latters race, however, was a big disappointment to his many admirers and was below his true form. Slippery Kim was an easy winner, displaying terrific speed throughout and drawing away into a long lead at the end. Tippity Witehet was second and the favorite third. Rnl Parrs good juniper Warlock won the steeplechase in a canter after a splendid exhibition over the jumps. The closest finish of the afternoon came in the third race, the smallest of margins separating Sister Emblem, Romeo and Handfull. The Laionia Championship gold cup, won by S. C. Hildreths three-year-old Mad Hatter, was placed on exhibition on the lawn and was greatly admired by the big throng. Starter Milton suspended jockey J. "Wessler for disobedience at the post on Friday. Jockey Kummer, the leading rider at the Empire City meeting, lias written that lie will be on hand on Monday to ride during the remainder of the Laurel season. Other riders from New York also will be here. The surplus from the selling and claiming races of Friday will make Mondays purses eacli ,733.64. The overnight purses today were ,898.60 each as the result of the surplus of Thursday. Dottie Vandiver and Toadstool were placed on the schooling list by starter Milton for their bad behavior. Mad Hatter, the winner of the Latonia Championship Stakes, is named to start on Monday in a mile handicap and it will be his first appearance since his great victory in Kentucky. Sam Hildreth put in a claim of ,055 for his horse Search Light HI., winner of the last race vesterday, and retained him. E. T. Zollicoffer had put in a bid of ,710 for the horse. James Boden lias sent word lie will reach Laurel tomorrow with the fast filly Pen Rose and Senator Crow.
