JOHN P. GRIER POINTED FOR WALDEN BALTIMORE, Md., October 28. John P. Grier, the son of Whisk Broom II. and Wonder, that finished second to the brilliant Man o War in the Futurity at Belmont Park, is to be a starter in the ,000 Walden, Pimlicos great mile race for two-year-old colts and fillies, which will be renewed on November 6. James Rowe, manager of the racing and thoroughbred breeding interests of Harry Payne Whitney, is himself authority for this announcement. Trainer Rowes idea of this brilliant two-year-old, which until the successes of On Watch in the Capital and Manor Handicap at Laurel Park and the Queen City Handicap at Latonia was considered the best two-year-old colt racing in Maryland, was indicated at Laurel last week when he placed a prohibitive price on John P. Grier to a sportsman in search of a high-class three-year-old prospect. Rowe declares that he believes John P. Grier to be as good a colt as Man o War, and predicts that the son of Whisk Broom II. will prove that he is next year. The reason, says Rowe, that John P. Grier has not been filling his engagements at Laurel Park is the weather has been so bad and the going so uncertain he has not been able to give the colt systematic training. But he does not believe that the bad weather of the last fortnight will continue indefinitely and he expects to have the colt ready for a high-class race in the Walden. Rowe has always liked to race his two-year-olds over a considerable distance of ground in the fall of the year. It seems probable now I hat John P. Griers opponents in the Walden will be On Watch, the two-year-old hero of the Laurel meeting and a long distance runner of established merit; Constancy, winner of the Spinaway at Saratoga and the 0,000 Eastern Shore at Havre- de Grace; Carmandnle, winner of the Eastview and the Wakefield Handicap; Cleopatra, winner of the Champagne; David Harum, a capable long distance running stable-mate of Cleopatra; Blazes, winner of the Breeders Futurity at Lexington; Hobey Baker and Kallipo-lis. .
