DAY OF UPSETS AT LAUREL King John Furnishes Surprise by Beating Poorly Ridden Wlalvolio. Frogtown Suffers Defeat at Hands of Grandee Silk Bird Breaks Down. LAUREL, Mtl., October 28. The races sit Laurel this afternoon were rim over a drying out track. The fields, while they were made up of the cheaper Krudc of horses, were well balanced and keen finishes came with the running of a majority of the races. It was. however, a day of upsets, few of the public choices winning. In the opener My Dear beat Allivan, the favorite, ji scant length, and was then sold by private sale to G. "W. Forman for ,000. After having a commanding lead at the eighth post St. Qucntin tired and Just managed to last long enough to Ktagger home a head in front of General in the tjilrd race. The race for maiden two-year-olds furnished a good contest, the well backed Kings Champion coining from behind in the stretch and beating Jean Bullant a neck in a driving finish. Silk Bird, favorite in the steeplechase, was pulled up after the second jump and later was found to have broken down. Clootz easily won the race, leading by a wide margin, throughout. King John furnished a huge surprise by taking the measure of Malvolio in the fifth race, the latter losing in the final strides because poorly ridden at the end. Grandees victory over Frogtown was another surprise handed to the talent. Several stables arrived at Pimlico yesterday from New York. Among the more important ones were the stables of J. 13. Widener, L. Watcrbury, W. It. Cqe nnd G. D. Widener. Jockey .7. Butwell got in from New York and was a visitor at Laurel this afternoon. He will ride at 1lmlico nnd Howie as a free lance and at the conclusion of the last-named meeting will depart for New Orleans to join the stable of C. A. Applegate, which is being trained by Larry Ilheinheiiuer. A big special will put out of Laurel one day next week for Havana. There will be about 103 horses in the consignment, which will include the strings of U. K. Moore, R. L. Bresler, J. W. Pangle, J. W. Dayton and the Casco Stable. Edward Benl McLean is arranging to send a division of his Htrlng to Oriental Park to race next winter and jockey OBrien will accouipanj the stable to do the riding. Two claims were put in yesterday for American Boy in the first race and he was retained by his owner for ,505. A. L. Austin retained Goldine for ,510 and W. II. Frey the colt Who Cares for ,510. News reached here of the death of Mrs. D. F. Kinney, wife of the horseman of that name. The burial was from the home of Mr. Kinney in Detroit tills afternoon. Considerable interest is being shown in the outcome of the "Ticket of Leave" Steeplechase, to be decided tomorrow, and a large crowd of hunt club members and devotees of the sport through the field is expected to swell the attendance to goodly Itroportions. This will be the last stake feature of the meeting.
