PLANS OF THE SHORT GRASS STUD Marian Hcod Not in Foal This Season Mares and Flans of the Farm. LEXINGTON, Ky.. November S. Emil Herz and his associates in the Short Grass Stud Corporation have at Kingston Farm a hand of thoroughbreds of which they have a right to he proud. Their stallion is Short Grass, by Laveno Outburst, by Enthusiasm. Short Grass raced seven seasons, won in Ireland, England and the United States, and was retired sound in the autumn of 191C. His first foals were those of 191S, and among them was the chestnut colt, dam Ellangowan, for Avhicli Commander J. K. L. Ross paid 1,000 in August. The mares number sixteen, and they are, with two exceptions, race Avinners. The tAvo are Marian Hood, dam of Suiibonnct and her yearling brother, the highest priced yearling at Saratoga in August, Commander Ross having paid 5,000 for him, and Intrigue, dam of the filly by Ultimas, for which Samuel Ross paid ,000 at Saratoga. Marian Hood was never raced. These two are the elderly matrons of the establishment, and Marian Hood is one of only three of all the mares bred this year seemingly not in foal. Adele, the four-year-old broAvn daughter of Burgomaster and Elizabeth I., daughter of Charcot and Kate Pelletier, by Rapture, just out of training, is the newest member of the brood mare division. Common LaAA-, four-year-old daughter of The Commoner and Brief, by Badge, dam Verdict, by Leamington, is another that Avas retired this year. The following is a list of the other mares: Queens Loch, ch. 10, by Lochryan Queen of the Plains dam of six Avinners, by Salisbury. Christophine, br. S, by Plaudit Emma Traumiller dam of Mrs. Gamp and St. Dustin, by Eshcr. 4 JTimtalir. .8, by BurgomasterCprrection sister to Domino and dam of Yankee, by Himyar. Fair Helen, ch. 7, by Broomstick Belle of Troy dam of eight Avinners, by Fonso. Ida Clare, b. 7. by Golden Maxim Wealth dam of four Avinners, by RainboAA-. Set Square, ch. 7, by Simon Square Scythia II. dam of three Avinners, by The Sailor Prince. Gentlewoman, b. 0, by Sain Momespun dam of seven Avinners, by Hanover. Safe Home, b. C, by Hilarious Rpsctinge dam of Jocular, by Ossary. Cheer, br. 5, by Plaudit Expressing dam of Explicit,. Encore and Kilmer, by Star Shoot. Mary Powell, b. 5. by Star Shoot Flora Pomona dam of four Avinners", by Florist. Triplo Crown, br. 5, by Star Shoot Miss Kearney dam of three Avinners, by Planudes. Consora, br. -1, by The Commoner HaAvksora dam of five Avinners, by Hawkswick. The AAeanlings number thirteen, twelve by Short Grass and a bay colt by Spanish Prince Junta. "It is our intention," said Mr. Herz, "to bring our stud up to a total of twenty-fiA-e marcs and two stallions. We are in the market for another first-class horse. Whether Ave Avill sell the produce of our mares as yearlings next summer, or Avhetlier we Avill train and race them, remains to be determined, but one thing is certain, Ave are not going to peddle these colts and fillies off privately by tAvos and threes, though I Avill not say Ave Avould not sell them all to one person. We feel that AA-e have made a good start as breeders and Ave know that Ave have selected good individuals for matrons and paid good prices for them." Unless it is "breeding Avinners from Avinners," Hers seems to have no theories about mating and breeding such as are possessed by so many men in the early stages of their careers.
