I a " t . t !2 w t w r, i d n " GREAT INFLUENCE OF STAR SHOOT RECORD OF THE SON OF ISINGLASS AND ASTROLOGY, BOTH AS A SIRE OF WINNERS AND OF MOTHERS OF WINNERS, ATTRIBUTED " m His hermit mom " " 1 By EXILE The feat this year accomplished by the still living sire Star Shoot, now twenty-one years of age, arid now standing second of the list of winning sires and fourtli on the winning brood mare sire list, is something heretofore unaccomplished by any other sire in my experience. Not only is Star Shoot second as a winning sire, but "what with so much rich and important stake races to be run off. during the Plmlico meeting he stands, 011 account of the number of his get in service and the ontstanaing excellence of Sir Barton, a more than good chance of regaining the leadership. I did not, however, begin with any intention of writing of Star Shoots achievements as the sire of winners, but rather to call attention to the success of his daughters as brood marcs and the probable cause of his success in this particular. Even though Isonomy got Arcadia, the dam of Isonomy and Isinglass, Lady Lightfoot, Prince Palatines dam, I have never thought members of the Sterling line to Birdcatcher have any special merit as brood mare sires. WCnlock, sire of Dead Lock, dam of Isinglass, however, sired a number of good brood marcs, among them Sanda, dam of Sainfoin, Sierra, Black Sand and Golden Garter. Of course, any horse is apt to sire a good brood mare or so, but I do nqt believe much of Star Shoots ability as a brood mare sire is to be attributed to his Sterling descent, but rather to Hermits daughter, his dam, Astrol-. ogy. I dont suppose many of you ever saw Isinglass, but a number of you have seen Star Shoot. Take it from me, Star Shoot does not in any way resemble his sire, Isinglass, and derives his coat coloring from Hermit, which, according to the Yorkshire breeder, Mr. Mclntyre, was one of the best looking horses which ever won the Epsom Derby. Star Shoot is more of a Hermit than anything.- These Hermits arc fast horses. Star Shoots get can run. The Isonomys are stayers, ahd both Hermits first and second dams, Seclusion and Miss Sellon, are daughters of the Herod horses, Tadmor and Cowl. So far Astrol-j ogys pedigree is suggestive of brood mare success, and this is backed by an infusion of the blood of Young Melbourne, through Stella, daughter of Brother to Strafford. Next comes Gilberts dam, by Toxophilite, sire of Musket, and also of Quiver, dam of La Fleche and Memoir, and Toxophilites dam, Legerdemain, was by that good brood mare .sire, the Herod horse, Pantaloon, and so to Maid of Masham herself. Nowadays a number of us talk glibly of the success of the descendants of Maid of Masham. Now the question. The cause of this success? My answer must be Young Melbourne and his sons. There is only one comprehensive way in which blood lines may be satisfactorily studied and understood, and this is by tabulating the various families, as I have, and tracing each special branch to its source. In this way you will soon come to realize what great influence certain horses have had in the winner producing qualities of these families, and this is the reason of my certain conviction that better success attends the breeding of race horses by balancing up the lines of Herod, Matchem and Eclipse than by any other plan of mating. The Maid of Masham line is on top today and its excellence, I am convinced, is, in great measure, due to the blood of Young Melbourne. Inbreeding, if persisted in, must wind up in deterioration. Turf history is proof of this. The prac-t tical passing of the No. 6 family is due to inbreeding. The family of Pocahontas is less productive of winners nowadays than in times past. Have a care or St. Simon will soon be overdone. Any time now another Galopin or The Baron is liable to appear, hence the real value of the fresh line to Defence and Whalebone, through Sardanapale and Prestige and the Iago blood of "Ben Brush and his descendants, In all, twenty-four daughters of Star Shoot this year have produced the winners of eighty-five races and nearly 5,000. Since 1 started this I have seen Midway victorious in the running of the Louisville Cup, and as Midways dam. Thirty-third, is by Sir Dixon, and in the stakes of a value of over ,000 Sir Dixon now supersedes Star Shoot. A consideration of Sir Dixons pedigree must, however, be left for another day, but while on the Star Shoot tack, the Sir Barton breeze fills our sails and in this connection I would much like to know what has become of Lady Sterlings unnamed daughter, which was sent abroad in 1912. Ineligible as she is to the English General Stud Book, though right enough here, if alive, this filly would be invaluable as a brood mare. Hunt her up, some of you; it might be worth your while, for, so far as I know, this is the only filly Lady Sterling ever had and her family is in imminent danger of extinction. Yes, Star Shoot is a good brood marc sire indeed, and any daughter of his is well worthy of con- sideration, more especially those which show. the Herod cross, either by way of Hanover or other lines, the most desirable. r Sterling Oxford 12 i Birdcatcher 11 E bay, 1S68 i Honey Dear 12 E r Isonomy ... .19 J Whisper Flatcatcher 3 E bay. 1875 1 , Silence 12 M . g.
