HANOVER A NDHISGREAT DAUGHTERS BEST HORSE EVER BRED IN AMERICA SHONE AS RACE HORSE AND SIRE OF RACERS AND BROOD MARES THE QUESTION OF HIS PEDIGREE OF NO MOMENT By EXILE HanoTPr was the best and most influential horse foaled in the United States since the days of Lexington. Hanover hns, perhaps, had more to do with the making of turf history the world over than even Lexington. There can lie no guarantee that the pedigree of Hanover is as rendered. Hanovers ancestress, Ophelia, is given as a daughter of Wild Medley, son of Mendoza, whose dainwas a daughter of a Spanish horse named Pensarola, of which nothing is known save that he was potent. It is not at all satisfying to find that the best horse bred in many a long day in this country so soon runs to the obscure, and I prefer to think that some mistake was made in the rendering of Ophelias .pedigree and that Hanover in truth was what he in every way proved himself to be thoroughbred. If .not, what use stud records, purity of lineage and the like? Convinced, however, am I that Hanover was thoroughbred. lie a great race horse, winning upward of 18,000 and apparently all distances were alike to him, for, as a four-year-old, he won a sweepstakes at a half mile, another of live and one-half furlongs and then beat so good a mare as FIrenze for the one and one-half miles Coney Island Cup and also was too "good for Kingston in the running of the one and one-eighth miles Coney Island Stakes. All of you know what a splendid success Hanover became as a sire of race horses of the best class and of how his sons kept the great game going, but did you ever stop to think that Hanovers greatest fame lies in the excellence of his daughters as brood mares? Hanover was thoroughbred and Hanover was a Glencoe. Col. E. F. Clay, who bred the horse, once told me, as he had "before told Mr. Dwyer when Hanover was a yearling, "I cannot account for his color and markings, but I know him to be a son of the bay horse Hindoo, got from the bay mare Bourbon Belle, by the bay horse Bonnie Scotland. Where, then, did the chestnut livery come from? An inheritance from his ancestor Glencoe." nanovers success as a brood mare sire js more on a par with that of Glencoe than any other member of this line to Herod. Do you know that four Epsom Derbys have been won by horses carrying American blood in their veins and that three of these, Orby, Durbar II. and Grand Parade, all show the blood of Hanover, and that the fourth, Iroquois, is fortified with a cross of Hanovers ancestor, Glencoe? Hanover is the sire of Khoda B., dam of the Derby winner Orby, whose name now stands second on the English winning sire list. Ilhoda It. also bred the One Thousand Guineas winner Rhodora, and Hanovers daughter Urania is the dam of Armenia, which bred the Derby winner Durbar II. to the cover of Bahelais. Down in Australia, too, they know something of the excellence of Hanover, for the winner of the Bond and three-miles Australian Cup, Lemprlere, is out of Hanovers daughter Colline. Hero at home Hanovers daughters have bred such as this years Kentucky Derby winner Sir Barton, the International winner Sir Martin, other Kentucky Derby winners in Worth and Donerail, besides Tanya, Tangle and scores of others of the best. Never was there such a list of important winners claiming one horse as the sire of their dams, and the Hanover inlluence is just as strong today as ever it was and it is the exception to find a native-bred horse which earns distinction either on, the turf or in the stud which does not show a dash of Hanover or his sire, Hindoo. Dead these twenty years, yet here is Hanover second on the winning brood mare sire list, the offspring of his daughters this year having won close on to 170,000. A wonderful line this one horse Glencoe sequence, of Vandal, Virgil, Hindoo and Hanover, every one of them as a brood mare sire a nonpareil. Hanover was bred to be a great brood mare sire, conformation, lineage, characteristics, everything su"gested it, for Hanover was in the male line a descendant of Glencoe, sire of Pocahontas, and his dam Bourbon Belle a daughter of Bonnie Scotland, whose dam was Queen Mary the immortal, daughter of the Herod horse Gladiator, which also got Miss Gladiator, dam of the "avenger"of Waterloo," Gladiateur. Hanovers granddam Ella D. was got by Glencoes best son Vandal, and the next dam, Falcon, a daughter of Woodpecker, grandson of Lexingtons ancestor. Sir Archy. Hanover was bred to be, insofar as his pedigree can be established, a great brood mare sire, and his sons and grandsons take after him in this, and I hereby enter just, one more appeal to the bloodstock breeders of the United States, while yet there is time to save the Hanover line from extinction. , .
