SOME EXTRAORDINARY AFRICAN RIDING How OOTier Davis Rode Eight Winners and Two Seconds in a Day. A correspondent of Horse and Hound, Charles Foster of Durban, Natal, South Africa, writes that journal of an extraordinary riding feat in Africa as follows: Two years ago, when the Hritish Expeditionary Forces had captured a German camp near Morogoro, I found an account of an army man who had in India won five or six races., in one day. Finding this paper in the enemys camp under such circumstances, and reading this fine record, brought to my mind a race meeting I attended at Dundee, Xatal, on Jubilee day, 1887, when I remembered a Mr. Oliver Davis riding eight winners on that day, but as I had no records and it being so many years ago, I had to wait until by return to South Africa to verify my memory by turning up an old newspaper cutting I had kept of this unique performance. The following is . a. copy: DUNDEE JUBILEE RACES. Held on June 20, 18S7. Trial Stakes, one mile W. II. Tatbams Chance Dodd, 1; Oliver Davis Comet owner, 2; T. X unus Rosy Wood, 3. Won after an exciting finish by a nose. They evidently did not have short heads in those days. Galloway Race, three-quarters of a mile heats. First heat Oliver Davis Secret owner, 1; G. de Koks Remittance Illing, 2; W. H. Tathams Soda Dodd, 3. Won by two lengths. Second heat Oliver Davis Secret owner, .1; . G. de Koks Remittance Illiug, 2; W. H. Tathams Soda Dodd, 3. Won by a length. Higgarsberg Plate, one and one-half miles Oliver Davis Lancer owner, 1; C. F. Dodds Satan owner, 2; G. de Koks Fairplay S. Tatham, 3. Won by a neck. --Pony Race, -cnc-half -mile W"-- H; ;-Tatliams Eclipzc S. Tatham, 1; C. F. Dodds Tommy owner. 2; Lutkins Ginger Brandy owner, 3. Won easily. Ladies Purse, one mile Oliver Davis Comet owner, 1; Tathams Chance Dodd, 2; G. de Koks Scamp Illing, 3. Won by a short head. Hurdle Race, two miles over eight hurdles G. Osmonds Bijou Illing, 1; Oliver Davis Baby owner, 2; C. Steers Galaxy Meintjes, 3. Won by six lengths. Owners Up Race, one mile Oliver Davis Secret owner, 1; T. Xunns Rosy owner, 2; Tathams Soda owner, 3. Won by three lengths. Forced Handicap, one and one-quarter miles Oliver Davis Lancer owner, 1; G., de Koks Fair-play Dodd, 2; Oliver Davis Secret Robinson, 3. Won by a neck. Consolation Handicap, one mile Oliver Davis Baby owner, 1; Xunns Rosy owner, 2; G. de Koks Sweep Illing, 3. AYon by a short head. Hurdle Match two miles over eight hurdles Oliver Davis Baby owner, 1; C. F. Dodds Canity owner, 2. AVon by six lengths. This is, I should say, about a record. Eight wins and two seconds in one day by an ovner riding his own horses wants a lot of beating.
