MONEY WON IN KENTUCKY RACING PRESENT YEAR SHOWS A REMARKABLE GAIN OVER 1918 IN GROSS VALUE OF DISTRIBUTION AMONG OWNERS IN STAKES AND PURSES Nothing more important in racing has occurred in this country than the acquirement of ownership and direction of the affairs of the Kentucky race tracks by the Kentucky Jockey Club. Such a consolidation of ownership is without precedent in the records of the sport. What it will develop into in the long run cannot now be foretold. It may, as it seems now, be beneficial to racing, or it may not, the objection that may be raised ultimately being that it is too much of a monopoly. However, that may be, it is easy to see that the owners who have raced their horses over the three big Kentucky tracks this year have substantial reasons for viewing their first year of operation under control of the Kentucky Jockey Club witli unqualified approval. In 1918 the gross return to owners from the racing at Lexington, Churchill Downs, Douglas Park and Latonia was 54,155. This year, witli Douglas Park eliminated, the corresponding return from the other three tracks was ,121,SG5, being an increase of 05,210, or nearly fifty per cent. Year by year since 1913 the Kentucky racing field had an annual gain over the preceding year, but nothing approximating the splendid increase of 1919. Latonia having been selected as headquarters for Kentucky racing and given by far the most racing days, was naturally mainly responsible for the years increase, its gain over 1918 amounting to 49,371. Equally striking was the gain in daily money output. How important the advance has been in this particular is shown by the fact that in 1914 the average daily distribution at Latonia was ,132.14, while this year it was 3,3S0.G2. At Churchill Downs it was ,571.75 in 1914 and 1,079.25 in 1919; while Lexington progressed from ,779.29 iu 1914 to ,170.25 this year. It is no wonder eastern owners were tempted to adventure their good horses in quest of the rich spoils of Kentucky racing. Full particulars of the outstanding statistical features of the Kentucky field are embodied in the following three tabulations: Si5 V. Hildreth the leading -winning owner, that race being the Latonin Championship Stakes. The value of this race was so great that It was bound to make whatever owner won it the leader. It will probably be the determining factor to the same end for years to come, although its net value will probably be less than on the occasion of Its first running. Outside of that race Hldreth took no part in Kentucky racing., Second to him in. earnings was the Ogden Stable, which, raced a number of serviceable horses, wilh the advantage of having the star light weight jockey C. Robinson to ride them. Its principal winner was the speedy gelding War God. iallaher Bros, generally fare well In Kentucky racing and "did so this year, to such good effect that their stable was third in money won. J. S. Hawkins had in Stockwell a little better than an average three-year-old and largely owe to his good racing their prominent position in fourth place, C. M. Garrison is another eastern owner who found it profitable to take a chance in Kentucky, a foray with his excellent three-year-old Be Frank giving him the rich spoils of the Latonia Derby last June, while another similiar expedition last month resulted in a victory for Be Frank in the long distance Latonia Cup. It thus came about that with Sir Barton taking the Kentucky Derby, the only Kentucky stake race of major importance that fell 1o a Kentucky owner, was through Midways victory in the Kentucky Handicap. E. R. Bradley, ,T. K. L. Ross, B. .7. Brannon, M. Goldblatt, J. W. Parrish, W. F. Poison and Williams Bros, were a group of owners whose stable returns did not vary greatly in totals, each winning in excess of 0,000, and less than 5,000, illustrating how welll the money won in the Kentucky field was distribute!. F 0 3 1 600 Many horses of the best class of the year took part in the Kentucky campaign, which opened at Lexington Thursday, April 24, and came to an end at Churchill Downs on Saturday, November 1. The chief thing revealed at Lexington in a racing way was a demonstration of Exterminators continued high class form in his victories in the Ben All and Camden Handicaps. The Churchill Downs meeting, which followed, showed Kentuckians the best three-year-olds of 1919, when Sir Barton cantered home alone in the Kentucky Derby; also that his stable-mate, Billy Kelly, could have won the race had it been in accordance witli his owners policy to have him do so. This same meeting showed Midway in great spring form when he won the Clark Handicap, and again in the more valuable Kentucky Handicap. Such other good horses as Under Fire, High Cost, Miss Jemima, Beaverkill, Buford. Raider, American Ace, The Porter, St. Bernard, Major Parke, Nominee, Lillian Shaw, Milkmaid. Prince of Como, Leochares, Jorice, War God, Linden, Royce Rools, Vulcanite, Regalo, Top Coat, Silvery , Light, Green Grass, Freecutter, Talisman, Angon and others of great merit starred at this meeting and furnished the keynote to the high class racing that continued to delight thousands of spectators daily until the Kentucky campaign of the year came to a regretted end. The Latonia spring and summer meeting had as high points the victory of Be Frank in the Latonia Derby, the development of Sway and Stockwell into serviceable three-year-olds; the disclosure that Cotton Blossom was a star among the two-year-old fillies when she won the Cincinnati Trophy and defeated all the other best Kentucky two-year-olds. Later racing brought such notable racing feats as the success of Blazes in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington; of Mad Hatter in the first running of the Latonia Championship Stakes; of Be Frank in the Latonia Cup, and of Midway in the Louisville Cup. Many other noble clashings occurred from time to time, and all in all, it was probably the most brilliant racing campaign ever witnessed in Kentucky, not the least important feature being the really remarkable form shown by Senniugs Park after he had ripened into perfect racing condition, form that seemed to justify the 5,000 reported to have been paid for hiin by his present owner.
