DOMINIQUE BEST OF PETER QUINCES SAM HILDRETHS FLYING YOUNGSTER EXPECTED TO BE A FIRST-CLASS RACING FUTURE STAYING POWER SHOWN IN THE WALDEN STAKES By EXILE" During a recent visit to Pimlico I witnessed the racing of three juveniles, all of which, I am convinced, will play leading parts in the racing of next year, and these Dominique, Donnacona and Faisan Dorc. It majr not be uninteresting, therefore, to see what promise they have, as judged by the pedigree guide, of improving or living up to the form they have displayed 1 1lls back end. It is all well to say, "There is nothing in breeding or in the blending of the lines of Herod, Matchcm and Eclipse." There is no getting away from the fact, however, that the blend is going as strong if not stronger than ever. What, with our leading juvenile Man o War bred cn this plan of mating, The Tetrarch bred Herod to Eclipse, the premier English sire, and by odds the best of our three-year-olds, Sir Barton, bred on a like plan of mating, as is that sterling campaigner and Cup winner Exterminator. Just to clinch matters, i-Iong comes Dominique, bred Eclipse to Matchcm, to carry off the big two-year-old feature of the Fimlico meeting, the Walden Stakes. Dominique I take to be the best two-year-old ever iircd by Peter Quince, not forgetting, of course, such as Luke, Imperator and Papp. Dominique can run as fast as any one of them, and perhaps stick it out the best of all, which trait, I am certain, is in great measure due to the introduction of the stout, coarse, if you will, strain of Melbourne brought into his pedigree via Oddfellow and Barcaldine. Oddfellow mares, I know, frequently come a trifle coarse and rugged, but good ones, bright and keen, such as Berry Maid and her now Australian sister, Dewberry, are in every way worthy of consideration as brood mares. This brood mare subject is to me ever of absorbing interest. The better the soil the better the crop, and this the secret of brood mare success. Rubus, granddam of Dominique, is by Bramble, sen of Bonnie Scotland, whose influence for good on the American thoroughbred horse is incalculable. Recently in conversation with Mr. James Rowe, who as a trainer has few equals and no superiors, quietly told me he never knew one of the Ben Brush tribe to Uinch, and the combination of Bonnie Scotland and Australian in Bramble and the Barcaldine biood of his dam, Berry Maid, may enable Dominique to weather the three-year-old storm with more credit to himself over longer courses than any of the progeny of Peter Quince that have gone before. Anyway, stay or not, Dominique can run fast, and in the most capable hands of Sam Hildreth should be able to hold his own with the best of them the coming year over a mile route and perhaps farther, for I will admit having been treated to a pleasant surprise when I saw him withstand the attentions of Donnacona at. the end of a winning, race in the Walden Stakes. r Domino 23 Himyar 2 5 Alarm 15 E brown. 1S01 . ?ra ; - " C r Commando . . . !
