BEST FINISH OF AFTERNOON Marks Decision of the Mile and a Sixteenth Race at Havana. L I Other Winners Have Easy Time First "Baby" Race on January 6. j "" i i nAVANA, Cuba. December 23. The mile and a sixteenth race at Oriental Park this afernoon furnished one of the best contests of the day. The finish was a nip and tuck affair, the first three fighting it out from the top of the homestretch to the finishing mark and Bill Hunley proved the gamest in the final drive, beating out OMalley by a head. Jack Healey, which rah third, was beaten by a neck. Well backed horses won the majority of todays races, which were run over a track that was drying out and indications are that the going will be good tomorrow. "Qnin and Count Boris were equal favorites in the opener. Whatever hope there was of seeing a .keenly contested struggle, betwen the pair was soon dispelled when Quin ran away from the Spence representative entering the backstretch and increased his advantage as the race progressed. Nor did the following race furnish any more excitement, as Peaceful Star raced along in front under restraint and without the semblance of any serious opposition. Yorkville duplicated Quins performance by leading throughout in the third race by a wide margin, willi his rider pulling him up at the end. In the fourth race. Hes A Bear bolted outside the fence directly after the start and was pulled up while Annabelle. after opening up with a long lead". Mlredbndly and-hnd- to be hard ridden to-istall offMajor Bradley, who finished fast and -wearing the winner down. Jockey Jarrell had two winning mounts on the horses Annabelle and Exempted. The following notice was posted in the secretarys office: "The first race for foals of 1918, and the two-year-olds of 1920. will be carded January 0. 1920. Entries will be accepted only after proof that the names allowed have been submitted and with the approval of the schooling starter having been given." F. Delbarrio purchased from C. K. Moore on private terms the three-year-old Railbird. The horses Fly Home, Rameau and Lubelski, owned nnd trained by J. J. Holtmnn, will be sold in the paddock next Saturday. Major Bradley, which belongs to J. J. OMalley. and was also trained by Mr. Holtman, will be sold at the same time. The horses Golden Chance, Deckhand and Star Baby have been placed on the schooling list by starter Milton.
