PICTORS RUNAWAY VICTORY ♦ Easily Captures the Mardi Gras Handicap Off by Himself. — ♦ — ■ Marie Miller Defeats a Band of Crack Sprinters — Bread Man Takes His Race — Gossip. a NKW ORLEANS. La.. February 17.— The Business Mens Ba :ing Associations Fair Qreeante BMetiag came to a prosperous close this afternoon with an overflow attendance and some interesting racing. The weather man had seen fit to come around and give the track a good wetting down, so the races were run in a tear we of thin mud. Among the impressions left in the mind of the -pectators was one lo the general effect that Iictor i- a pretty good son i a race horse. Me has warn three of his four races here and taken two of the Jso.tKW stakes offered for the handicap hor-es. Mis success in the Crescent City Handicap January :i1 was only achieved in a hard drive by a half length over Slippery Kim. but today he akatpl] ran away from his opponents ami won from the same I horse by eight lengths. Damask, as on the first -named occasion, finishing third and not in the hast disgraced. It was asking a great deal of him to give weight by the scale to every .. bet bane in the race, and his nerforauuaeea in both rhatests makes him out a capital three -year-old. If not raced too much in the meantime, he may have sonaethlag to do with the decision of t he Kenan ky Derby. Iictor may or may not be ■ good weight carrier, but with something like his impo-t of today up and over a muddy or sloppy-track he is a belter than average race horse. His sire was second te Spearmint when that great colt wen the Kpsom Derby in l!Kl . With a competent rid -r up. Bolster ran a g 1 race here and was only beaten a head for third money. Marie Miller surprised a good many in the third ravee by taking such star sprinters into camp as Ix gotal. Arnold. Taenia. Ticklish. Charlie Uy decker and American Ace. hut not everybody, for she was will backed. Tacola was the choice, with Ticklish next in favor, but after Arnold had led for a quarter Marie Miller passed him and in a strenuous finish won from Legotal by a head, with Arnold a lnpp-d on third. Tacola and Ticklish finished fourth and fifth respectively and soundly beaten. It was a creditable performance on the part of the speedy mare, which was never better than she is now. The unlucky Whitney filly. Cointreau, provided another disappointment for her many adherents in the race for two-year-olds that came first cm the days card. She was the favorite, but was sepiai-ely beaten. Silver Springs taking a ipiick lead ami winning all the way. with White Star HaWaiag second and Lands Knd third. Cointreau heuan slowly and was only beaten two beads by the two last named, but that was more than enough for her backer-. Bread Man was a hot favorite for the third race- and. running a good mile, won by a length from Itallybell. with Allivau a poor third. Who Cares made most of tin- running, but when Lyke released Bread Man from restraint the result was c;uiekly put out of jeopardy. FINAL RACE TO W. H. BUCKNER. War Mask took the fifth race from Lazy Lou by a head, Frank Monroe won the sixth all the Way and V. H. Buckner brought the curtain down on a good meeting when he- galloped home well in advance of CabaUa in tin- seventh. Financially the meeting did not come up to the expectations at the- management, according lo reports, hut a handsome balance on the right side of the ledger is a prospect and much of the pre-opening obligations will be liquidated. Pram a racing Standpoint no winter BMetiag conducted anywhere on this continent has excelled it. Tin- apart, under the sharp supervision of the competent staff of stewards, has been wholesome ami the few attempts at digression from the set rule were- instantly disastrous to the offenders. The Ibreaepaed strike- here by horsemen was settled this morning and ertrles made in routine style for the Jefferaaa Park race-, where a twenty-free days spring meeting begins tomorrow. The threatened deadlock between bereemea and the Jefferaaa track management was averted by tin-receipt of a Iclogram hCte from LexingSJaa head .punters of the Thoroughbred Horse A— o. -iattoit that an agrei-ineiif was in effect between the committee representing tiie Thoroughbred Horse- Aaaa ciation and the Jefferson Iark track management with respect te daily parse distribution. The heme liu-ii sought to hav.- the management di-tribute ,000 daily. Inn ;. D. Bryan, tin- leading spirit at Jefferson Iark. claime-d that the 14.904 daily hi-association Was giving away was more than his agreement called for. It i- more than likely that if conditions warrant there will he an increase- in the daily parse distribution later in tin- ineeling. Meanwhile everything is serene again. Bocae miacrenats attempted to stuff a apanage in Courtships iio-trils yesterday, but the sponge was detected while- I hi- horse was in the paddock anil he shewed none the wane in the race la- started iii. for hi- won il. B. A. .lone- report- that his good colt Hilly lb.--, for which he i- -aid to have- refused an offer of sl..IMhi. is in a bad way. The- board of appeals here will held a meeting not Friday to review the- appeals id those who came uuih r the ban during the prias.nl meeting. e
