VETERAN HORSEMAN PASSES AWAY Michael Danaher Dies in Baltimore Hospital as Result of an Accident Michael T Danaher who died in a Baltimore hospital on Thursday was a veteran of the turf and almost the last of the old school horsemen who were equally at home in preparing a horse for racing through the field or on the flat He passed away as the result of injur sustained when he was struck by au automobile while leaving the Pimlico course during the spring meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club ClubDanaher Danaher was an Irishman and had the sharp caustic wit of many of his race He was ever ready with an answer that on occasions could he as sharp and biting as vitriol He was a familiar figure at all the race courses winter and summer for more than fifty years and he was known from New York to San Francisco In the early days of the racing career of the Dwyer Brothers Mike Danaher as he was known was close to Michael the plunging member of the famous racing firm He shared in a coup with Michael Dwyer on Avulon at Sheepshead Hay in 3885 that gave Jimmy Kelly Cridge Lucien Appleby and other big bookmakers of that day a jolt which they didnt get over for a long time Avalou by Aramis Sprightly by Lexington was a brother to that good horse Are tino raced by John Carter He was a cripple when Dinnher got hold of him and it took a long time to patch the gelding up Danaher was quite an athlete in his younger days and had also trained foot runners and he applied some of the common sense used in getting human beings ready for their best efforts into his methods of handling crippled thoroughbreds It worked on Avalon which came out in such form in 1885 that he took the measure of performers like Barnutn Tom Martin Tyrant Col Sprague Gleaner Jim Renwick and Modesty The bay ron of Aramis was at his best when ho stepped in a hole at Jerome Park and wrenched an ankle so badly that his turf career was ended endedDanaher Danaher never got over the loss of Avalon and in his latter days maintained that he was first class That he was a good performer up to a mile and an eighth the records show Another fair per ¬ former that Danaher developed was Syntax by St Martin He had many steeplechasers and of these Killarney was probably the best bestA A link with the racing history of the past Michael T Dauaher will be missed
