BIG PRICE REFUSED FOR MAN 0 WAR Philadelphia Owner Said to Have Offered 260000 for tho Great Colt Without Avail NEW YORK June 14 It can hardly be said that Samuel I Riddle put a price on his great threeyearold Man o War at Belmont Park Sat ¬ urday when he turned down an offer of 250000 for the son of Fair Play Mahubah which many of the shrewdest horsemen in the country have pronounced not only the best race horse of any age in the United States today but the greatest thoroughbred that was ever bred in this country but he at least indicated that he values Man o War more highly than any other American horse was ever valued before Tho offer of 200000 for Man o War was made by Joseph L Alurpliy like Mr Riddle a sportsman of Philadelphia James Healey the manager of Mr Murphys racing and breeding establishments made it Mr Murphy who owned Flittergold a son of Hastings Fairy Gold and a brother of Fair Play the sire of Man o War up to last fall when he sold Flittcrgold to Philip Chinn desires Man o War for breeding purposes purposesMr Mr Riddle refused to sell Man o War because he wants to breed thoroughbreds himself and is organizing a stud for that purpose Mr Riddle said when he declined Mr Murphys offer that lie had refused a dozen offers for Man o War Before the Fair Play colt came to the races at Pimlico he could have got 200000 for him Man o War is to continue to race this year and next if he stands before being assigned to stud duty And neither Mr Riddle nor his trainer has any fear that ho will not stand two or three years if need be There is not so much as a pimple on one of his legs and he has never so much as sneezed since tlie Philadelphia sportsman paid 5000 for him at the Belmont sale at Saratoga a year ago last August
