HEAVY GOING AT LATONIA Rain and Mud Bring Scratches and Results Not Looked For Angon an Easy Winner of the theMain Main Race Mammy o Mine Real Mud Runner BY J L DEMPSEY DEMPSEYLATONIA LATONIA Ky June 14 The hard rain of last night brought with it a chance in track conditions and in ml runners had the call Small fields were tin order due lo the numerous withdrawals from the different dashes The racing was interesting betting again heavy and the attendance on a par with the best offday crowds crowdsA A handicap at threequarters for a purse of 11300 was tlie best offering and it was contested for by quartet of lairly good sprinters with vic ¬ tory eventually going to Angon tlie favorite over Lady Fair Play with Cobwebs following Siren Maid which wound up in last place raced for wardly in the early running but tlie going did not seem to her liking and she lost ground by racing wide on the turns The winner ran a good race and the 115 that he covered the distance in rep ¬ resented si good performance over the difficult course courseAn An upset came with the initial race in which Duke of Devonshire was i pronounced choice but his backers saw their hopes of his winning go glim ¬ mering when lie ran away while on the way to the I ost He covered the course before being brought under control and in the actual race he was too exhausted to cut a figure and brought up last Spearlene running in H Neustaders colors won this from Gipsey Queen QueenHarry Harry II heavily backed had no difficulty in the second race which he won easily from War Prize and Nordeck Mammy o Mine not fancied to any great extent because of a supposition that she could not run well in the going fooled the wiseacres by winning in runaway style from Frivol with Cointreau in third place placeCheer Cheer Leader another pronounced choice had little difficulty landing the mile and a quarter dash in easy style Quito finishing in second place and Marauder third thirdKunzaf Kunzaf showed himself thoroughly at home in the stiff going and led for the entire distance of the sixth race West Side landing in second place with Firebrand third thirdThe The Colleen Bawn was the supposed good thing in the closing race but after showing the way to the half tired badly the winner turning up in Virgo witli Lakross and Jack Reeves following followingUpset Upset and Gladiator which led the others in the Latonia Derby were transferred back to New York Sunday At the same time Paul Jones and hia stablemates Present and Some Baby departed Damask and Servitor also were sent east to rejoin the main Harry Payne Whitney division divisionRODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ DEPLORES SUSPENSION SUSPENSIONJockey Jockey Jose Rodriguez took his departure for Montreal The little Spanish rider by whose bril ¬ liant work Upsets Derby victory was made possible received a 1000 fee for piloting the winner He was disconsolate over his twentyfive days sus ¬ pension but thought it inadvisable to remain over and plead his cause He will depend on his con ¬ tract employer James Arthur to petition the stew ¬ ards for a modification of the suspension If what Rodriguez says is so then lie was entirely blame ¬ less for the interference in the fourth race result ¬ ing in the initial fivedays suspension He claims that Garner on Brunswick was the one at fault here and forced him over to slightly imped1 Easto sidc The latter did not suffer seriously from in ¬ terference but he did suffer from Luusfords faulty ride But for tlie earlier suspension it is improb ¬ able that the stewards would have suspended him for twenty days for his zealonsness on Upset UpsetThe The Derby running demonstrated Upset a good colt but it also showed Gladiator to be above the ordinary and possibly able to reverse the Derby result witli the winner in their next meeting He is naturally awkward His giant size makes him so and he had difficulty in making the sharp turns In the straightaway running he displayed fine speed and gamcness and he was wearing Upset down steadily in the final strides He will be a big factor in the allaged racing in the east because of his weight concessions and it would not be sur ¬ prising if he tops the threeyearold brigade of course excepting Man o War WarThe The wonderfully large and representative attend ¬ ance that witnessed the racing and Derby decision Saturday carried its own evidence as to the high esteem the sport is held in these parts A gratify ¬ ing additional tribute to racing was in the large and enthusiastic clubhouse contingent present It comprised the elite in these parts General man ¬ ager Matt J Winn and resident manager Harry F Itreivogel were highly elated over the attendance and expressed gratification that their untiring ef ¬ forts had met appreciation appreciationFrom From a betting point of view the Latonia Derby day did not fall far behind the Kentucky Derby day at Louisville The total amount wagered last Saturday was less than 20000 short of tlie amount handled on Derby day in Louisville LouisvilleFormer Former jockey Cal Shilling was an arrival with three horses owned by J K L Ross They were Motor Cop which is eligible to the Quickstep Han ¬ dicap to be run Wednesday Pampas a twoyearold colt by Short Grass Kllangowan eligible to the Harold Stakes and Cincinnati Trophy and Jacobina a twoyearold filly that is also well entered in stakes stakesP P Dunne today denied that the contract on H Kings services had been transferred to trainer Burttschell
