EXCELSIOR TO BONIFACE Speedy Son of Transvaal Victor in Jamaicas Opening Feature Lowers Track Record in Defeat ¬ ing Lanius Sunflash II and Peter Piper Easy Winners NEW YORK X Y June 11 The fourteenth running of the Excelsior Handicap featured an ex ¬ cellent card for the opening of the second meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica today and attracted an immense throng of racing devo ¬ tees which enjoyed some good sport sportThe The fields were unwieldly but the contestants wore well matched in all luit the third race in which Snnflasli II was considered invincible After the withdrawal from the Excelsior Handicap of Lion dOr Mad Hatter and Vexations which re ¬ duced the field to seven Naturalist and Lanius were selected as the most likely winners although the Hildreth entry Cirrus and Corn Tassel also Boni ¬ face had many admirers After a slight delay caused by the unruly actions of Boniface the field was away to a good start and raced down the back stretch closely bunched until rounding the turn for home where Boniface drew up with the leaders and under mild urging drew away finally to win lowering the track record by onefifth of a second Jmiiis hung on gamely as did Naturalist but the winner was clearly best as he met with slight in ¬ terference during the running runningA A liighweight handicap at five and a half fur ¬ longs was a secondary attraction and brought a good field of sprinters to the barrier among which whichJJon JJon dOr found the most favoritism It watsilio watsiliorace race for Peter TliierT However which took the lead at once and wen in hollow style Lion dOr chased the pacemaker throughout but tired when the eighth post was reached giving way to Irish Dream which had raced in forward contention all the way wayThe The third race proved little less than an exercise gallon for S C Hildreths Sunflash II which finished cased up four lengths in front of his nearest opponent opponentGuy Guy Bedwell returned from Montreal where lie went to saddle Milkmaid in her race at Blue Bon ¬ nets Saturday Milkmaid will be shipped today Ity trainer F Schelke of Commander J K L Ross stable to Belmont Park ParkRobert Robert Ilickman and W II Rowe arrived to ¬ day from ShreveiKirt La Laloe loe Levins well known in turf circles was mar ¬ ried Saturday to Miss Mary Levy 1 L Donovan sold Back Home to J W Murphy and purchased Canteen Girl from the latter latterWilliam William Garth returned from Kentucky Paul jilones Some Baby and Present arrived during the tafternoon at Belmont Park Mr Garth stated Paul lours lameness was such that it is hardly prob ¬ able he will be seen under colors again before the Saratoga meeting meetingW W S Kilmer wired J Simon Hcaly that he would dispose of all his yearlings witli the ex ¬ ception of the brother to Sun Briar also fifteen or twenty brood mares with or without weanlings during the Saratoga meeting meetingL L W Garth claimed Orderly for 1801 and C P Winfrey reclaimed Air Man for 17GO
