English were sanguine of success Tliis they achieved with Comrade after one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the race for M E de St Alarys colt only beat Embry by a head and the same narrow margin divided the second and third Blue Dun being fourth a couple of lengths away The course was in good condition and for the beaten horses no excuses could be made on the score of the going The weather was fine There was an enormous attendance among the company being the Queen of Koumania who was received by Marshal Foch and occupied a seat in the official stand English visitors made a 1850Commenting Commenting on the result yVigilant said in London Sportsman When Spearmint which was bought as a yearling for only 300 guineas carried off the Derby and Grand Prix de Paris the com ¬ ment was made that he was the cheapest horse ever sold at public auction His trainer P P Gilpin has now gone one better having won the Grand Prix with Comrade for which he gave the mere trifle of 25 guineas in his yearling days at a sale of young stock bred by Mr L Neumann Before his great triumph of yes ¬ terday Comrade which is by Bachelors Double Sourabaya a daughter of Spearmint Si renia hud won all his five races which were worth 13300 It was prior to his victory in the Trial Stakes at Ascot that Mr Gilpin disposed of a half share in Comrade for it was said 12000 guineas to the wellknown French sportsman M El de St Alary That gentleman has now seen his colors carried to victory a third time in the biggest nice of the French turf he having won it in 1902 with his famous mare Kizil Kourgan and again in 1013 by aid of Bruleur Seldom has there been a more representative field for a Grand Irix than with the English nail French Derby win ¬ ners and also the heroines o the English anil French Oaks in the lists As far as the Frencli horses were concerned the Irix du Jockey Club form was turned upside down Embry had been beaten by six lengths by Sourbier in the Derby and now the latter finished beliiml M Wattinnes colt Evidently the latter is the better stayer albeit it was a most exciting finish it being a case of heads only among the first three with Blue Dun a good fourth of fifteen Like Spion Kop which had run up light since the Derby Odol failed to run up to his Prix du Jockey Club form and the two Oaks winners Charlebelle and Flower shop showed their inferiority to the colts F Bullock the rider of Comrade is to be congratu ¬ lated on his first success in a race of the first importance in France Before the war in the days when Iteginald Day trained for the Hoyal Graditz Stud Bullock rode many big winners in Germany as he has in this country
