HUNTING FISHING AND SPORT John II Wallace Jr game and fish commis ¬ sioner of Alabama says same is more abundant in that state today than it has been in years and that owing to the large areas of uncultivated hinds in his state and the large amount of natural protection for the birds it will be i treat many years if ever before the sportsmen of Alabama will fail to have good shooting and plenty of it during the open seasons seasonsThe The prevalence of black bears at South Vancou ¬ ver B C is evoking much criticism in that dis ¬ trict One law black bear visited a thickly settled district at midnight recently It killed four ducks and badly mauled several pigs The squealing of the pigs aroused neighbors and their shouts alarmed the bear He scrambled out of the pen and ambled away in the darkness A few days ago a chicken coop was raided by a bear bearSix Six hundred acres of laud just north of the corporate limits of Defiance have been leased by the state of Ohio and will be converted into a game preserve which will be stocked with furbearing animals and pheasants Additional land it is said will be secured and the preserve enlarged from time to time The land is tributary to tiie Tiffin Hirer which empties into the Maumee Hirer at Defiance and is wild and covered for the most part with red oak brush and thickets and is cut up with ravines making it an ideal retreat retreatDucks Ducks geese snipes and plovers should appear in greater numbers next autumn throughout the middle west than before for ten or fifteen years as the migratory bird law prohibited the shooting of these birds last spring and many more went to the breed ¬ ing grounds in the North than formerly With more parent birds to breed there should be an in ¬ creased number of young birds and with more young birds together with the old birds that went north last spring there should be birds everywhere next fall and lots of them too unless the nesting season proves unfavorable which let us hope it will not notHenry Henry Davis familiarly known to hundreds of sportsmen as Hank Davis one of the best known of the old type of Adirondack guides died at his home at Saranac Lake recently following an op ¬ eration for appendicitis For many years Mr Davis maintained a camp upon a picturesque point on the shore of Long Pond near Saranac Inn Here he entertained many prominent men who had come to know him as a guide of unusual experience and skill In fact upon several occasions be had been invited by wealthy sportsmen to accompany them upon hunting and fishing trips to other parts of America AmericaThousands Thousands of North Dakota farmers it is said fed prairie chickens all last winter as a means of conserving what is considered by farmers the most important wild bird found in that state Spaces about 100 feet apart were kept clear of snow comparatively close to houses and barns and table crumbs screenlings and grain scattered thereon daily and the wild birds were fed as regularly as barnyard fowl Steward Lockwood of the faculty of the North Dakota Agricultural Col ¬ lege has made an investigation and determines that the prairie chicken annually eats many times its weight in insects
