i ! ! CONSIDERING THE ST. LEGER CHANCES Now let no one for a moment lose faith in Spion Kop unless indeed he learns that the Derby winner has been knocked out by the Grand Prix as his sire was. That Spion Kop is quite first-class I am sure and the pace at which the Derby was run enabled him to prove it. He had won it all the way almost from Tattenham Corner and not even Archaic, with all his possibilities of improvement, is ever likely to threaten danger to him nt any time over a distance of ground. Spion Kop is probably as great a horse as his sire was, and in conformation he looks as if he were a better one. The half-forgotten Orpheus is still worth a serious note in connection with the St. Leger. He. too, comes of the same immediate family as Spion Kop and Comrade, and he ran well In the Derby. Nor should Sarchedon be forgotten. If, by chance, the pace in the St. Leger should not be forced throughout, as the manner now is, then might Sarchedon win, just as he can certainly win a trial. Rut. at the same time, I revert to Rlack Gauntlet, whose effort against Manilardo wns more than creditable, inasmuch as he ran on under pressure and though an unfinished framework of a big horse, never lost his action for a single stride. He is, in fact, a lovely mover, and- will, I think, make a brave show at Doncaster. W. Allison In London Sportsman.
