CANADIAN-BRED COLT WINS Azrael Furnishes Surprise in the Buffalo Commercial Handicap. Favorites Prove Elusive, John Hachmeisters IvIcGoodwm Saving the Talent. : FORT ERIE. Ontario, August 17. T. Murphys shifty Canadian bred four-year-old colt Azrael scored his second consecutive victory at long odds when he led a good band of Dominion foaled horses to the finish in the Buffalo Commercial Handicap at a mile and seventy yards over the Fort Erie course this afternoon. Coming from behind under judicious riding by jockey G. Walls, the Inferno colt caught Captain It., the tiring pacemaker, in the stretch and had enough speed left to withstand the challenge of Yorkist, Captain B. finishing third. The Buffalo Commercial Handicap served as the feature of a comparatively ordinary card. A large crowd attended, however, and the racing was of a high order over a fast track and in a pleasant temperature. McGoodwin. a two-year-old from Kentucky, running in the colors of John Haehmeister and ridden by jockey W. Andress, started favorite backers off to a promise of success when he won from a band of maidens at three-quarters, but it was illusionary from there on the talent enjoyed but little favorable action. lHdleju.Ship,was-ayonsilMd-aibest-in-tho" second race, but J. L. Pauls filly Missed the Time furnished a surprise by leading the favorite all the way. and under a powerful ride on the part of jockey Kennedy lasted long enough to secure the decision by a nose. Again in the third race the talent was disappointed, two outsiders in Virgo and Encrinite finishing first and second, respectively, with Glen Light, the second choice, iu third place. La Kross found strong backing in the fourth race, but did nothing to warrant it, the winner turning up in Bond, which easily disposed of Mumbo Jumbo in the final eighth after the latter had set the pace from the start. BONIFACE HERE FROM SARATOGA. J. K. L. Ross Boniface arrived here shortly before the first race today to fill his engagement in the Edward W. Maginn Memorial Handicap tomorrow. The entries had been issued before his arriv,al, but he gets in with top weight of 132 pounds. II. G. Bedwell will come here to saddle the Ross representative, jockey Sande will have the mount. W. L. Olivers six-year-old MacDonald II. Wallflower II. gelding Kilts II. was destroyed after he broke down in the seventh race yesterday. C. I. Wilson was represented in the last race yesterday by Saga, claiming Flihbertygibbet, the winner, from J. Kennedy for ,500. The majority of horses racing here Avill he shipped to Windsor at the conclusion of the meeting tomorrow. Several stables, however, will he sent to Ottawa to be rested up for a week. Included in this division will be the stables of C. I. Wilson, D. Raymond, M. Gorman, B. J. Farris, C. Irby, II. Tullet. W. Ritte, J. de Estrampes, W. L. Oliver and E. T. Zollicoffer. W. Hall will ship Kuklnx to Montreal and pick up three other horses, which he has there. F. Dahnken, president of the First National Film Exchange and owner of a string of thoroughbreds racing on the Canadian circuit, was an arrival this morning from his home in New York. He will spend a week at Windsor, after which he will return to New York. Condition books for the Devonshire meeting were distributed among the horsemen today. Approximately 5,000 will be given away daily in the seven days from September 1 to September 8. Program books for the Blue Grass Fair Associations meeting at Lexington, from August 30 to September 4," also arrived here today. J. T. Strite shipped Wynnewood to Windsor today. J. B. Wagnon will send the Pelican stable to Windsor for the meeting beginning there Saturday.
