PAY HOMAGE TO MAN 0 WAR1 Champion the Magnet That Attracted Largest Crowd in History of Saratogas Famous Track. SARATOGA, N. Y August 23. The wonderful popularity of Man o War was fully demonstrated here Saturday. The announcement that he would be sen under colors in the Travcrs Stakes was responsible for bringing to the Saratoga track the largest crowd in the history of this famous American racing ground. In the gathering were many paying their visit to a race course for the first time. Many came from distant points, all bent on a glimpse, a cloe-up, if possible, "of the horse of the century." Never did "King Horse" receive greater homage. Those in the front ranks of the vast gallery in the paddock viewing the saddling preparations of the horse and while he was being walked in the limited space afforded him stood gazing at the magnificently proportioned chestnut and observing his every action. Man o War seemingly sensed the homage being paid him, for every little while he would come to a stop of his own accord, raise his head to the fullest and survey afar the crowd. There was nothing nervous in his movement and he. acted more sedate and quiet Saturday than in most of his previous starts. In commenting on Man o Wars race Saturday jockey Schuttingcr said: "There never was" a stage that Man o War was fully extended. For just a brief space about the three-eighths post I gave the colt Jiis head to serve to discourage John P. Grier further in his effort to overtake my mount and Man o War virtually flew. John P. Grier instinctively knew his master, for even in the early running, when I had a steadying hold of Man o War and invited John P. Griers presence alongside my mount, he seemingly refused to run on even terms. John P. Grier still had his struggle with Man o War at Aqueduct in memory and sensed the diopclcssness of a renewal of that duel.
