BONDAGES SUPERIOR SPEED Enables Him to Score Sensational Victory in Michigan Handicap. i Crowd of 8,000 Sees Splendid Racing on Opening Day of Devonshire Meeting, tr . WINDSOR, Ont.. September 1. After being away Inst and trailing his opponents for half the race, James Arthurs Bondage closed with brilliant speed j in the stretch and scored a head victory from Breeze in the ,000 Michigan Handicap, the feature of the opening day card at Devonshire Park this afternoon. Breeze was the early leader and he hung on with good eourage in the final drive. Dodge was a bang-up third after a game effort in the run home. The weather and track conditions were ideal and an except iona,lly large mid-week crowd of fully S.000 people was in attendance. The infield was pressed into service to accommodate the overflow. The track proper showed great improvement over the first meeting. This was shown by the fast time recorded. Large fields were the order in the majority of the races. The opening dash found Pop Eyes home in front and Tubby A. made ,a show of his opponents in the second race, which was for maiden two-year-olds. Inquiry and Cheer Leader were hard pressed to earn the verdicts by head margins in the third and fourth races respectively. While en route to the post for the opening dash Princess Myrtle ran away three-quarters of a mile and was pulled up after the start of the race. Jockey C. Puell was taken suddenly ill after the running ofvthoitliird-ra cc -aniL.wasforccdtoJ;caaccL bis remaining engagements. Al Austin shipped his stable last night to Havre Grace. "While crossing a switch in the yards the cat Occupied by the horses collided -with a box car, but beyond a shaking up the horses escaped serious injury. W. Perkins will ship his string to Lexington, Ky., at the conclusion of this meeting. Jockeys II. Krickson and H. Lunsford will accompany the stable. Jockey S. Wida is a new arrival here from Snratoga and will ride at this meeting. He is in elulrge of E. K. Bryson, his former employer. Jockeys L. Gaugcl and X. J. Barnes also arrived from Montreal. Due to la-:k of sufficient entries the race for Canadian-bred horses provided for today was declared off. The association is likely to experience much difficulty filling the races for the hoine-breds at this meeting, due to lack of material. A number of new improvements have been made since the last meeting here, including new fences ailit a liberal application of white paint, which has greatly added to the appearance of the plant. The officials for this meeting arc: Stewards, Joseph A. Murphy, J. F. Monk and W. A. Hewitt; placing judges, Joseph A. Murphy, W. B. Norvcll and J. O. Fletcher; racing secretary, M. N. Mnc-farlane; starter, E. Tribe. A representative of the horsemen will be in the stewards stand daily when not having any horses racing on that day. J. W. Schorr served in that capacity today. Others who will act during the meeting are J. B. Bespess, G. H. Kcene, James Arthur and E. K. Bryson.
