LADDER OF LIGHT WINNER Takes Ottawas Main Race, Aided by Butwells Good Riding E. T. Zollicoffer Scores a Double. OTTAWA. Ontario, September 2. G. W. Be.trd-mcres Stanhope II. Missing Link mare Ladder of Light, favored by a concession in the weight scale and an excellent ride by jockey Butwell, accounted for the Sovereign Handicap at a mile for Canadian-bred three-year-olds and over this afternoon, winning by a length from St. Paul, with Azrael in third place Butwell saved the Beardmore mare in behind Flame to the far turn and took the lead, after which he withstood a challenge from St. Paul just after the leaders straightened out in the stretch and drew away again under a vigorous ride. St. Paul, away in a tangle, worked his way to the loader on the outside, but tired in the final eighth. E. T. Zollicoffer scored a double, winning the third race, a purse race for maidens at a mile with Elmont, and the fourth at three-quarters with Hindoostan. Jockey Thurber rode botli of the Zollicoffer horses. Sweet Bouauet was piloted to an easy victory in the first lace, the conditions of which called for maiden jockeys, by J. Grune. He took the Seagram colt to the front and, ratiug him well, was never seriously menaced. Steeplechase rider N. Brooks returned to the saddle today after his fall from Rhomb on the opening day of the meeting, and scored with Stucco. J. W. Healy is pointing J. Lumsdens Free State and J. L. Murphys Oceania for the three-year-old steeplechase races at Blue Bonnets. Mr. Healy recently refused an offer of ,000 for the Lumsden jumper. Phil Leydecker is an arrival from Montreal, where his horses have been racing throughout the summer. C. I. Wilson, represented in the third race yesterday by Charley Boy, claimed Fair Lassie from T. Hodge for ,500 and the latter took Sans Peur II. from E. T. Zollicoffer out of the sixth race for ,900. T. Jockey T, Nolan was suspended by the stewards for the remainder of the meeting for cutting across in front of the others, going to the far turn with Myrtle Crown In the second race yesterday. Jockey W. Anderson, under contract to Frank Delbario, the Cuban horseman, is an arrival from Saratoga. The Delbario horses are stabled at Duf-ferin Park. Sam Nesbitt was among the days arrivals.
